I don’t know about you, but I’m one of those people who likes to keep my holidays separate. What do I mean by this? Basically, I prefer to give Thanksgiving its own special place in the month of November and wait until December to break out all the red and green decor. So now that it’s December 1st, it feels like we can officially start celebrating the Christmas season. And what better way to do so than reading Christmas books? :)
I recently started wondering what makes Christmas stories so great? After doing a little research, I came up with 4 things to love about Christmas romances that I’d like to share with you today.
- Christmas romances are all about family. There’s something so special about gathering with loved ones from near and far and partaking in traditions together. Christmas romances often focus on bringing characters home and giving them a sense of belonging. They are great reminders that relationships are what matter the most in life.
- Christmas romances are all about the flavors (and smells). There are just so many good foods associated with the holidays and it’s fun reading about them in Christmas books. The flavors and scents of these foods help add to the nostalgia surrounding Christmastime. I personally love including peppermint candy canes and hot cocoa in my Christmas romances because they are familiar items that readers can relate to.
- Christmas romances are all about the feelings. If non-holiday romances are like a single helping of warm fuzzies, then Christmas romances are like a double or triple dose of them. These books are packed with scenes that make you feel happy. Reading about characters baking, decorating a tree together, or opening gifts reminds us of the joy and satisfaction we get from doing these activities ourselves.
- Christmas romances are all about faith. Christmas romances often have themes of reconciliation and new beginnings, two themes that point to Jesus. Having a faith element in these books adds a great deal of depth and meaning to the stories. I enjoy seeing how authors incorporate faith into their Christmas romances.
Well, would you look at that! The four things I wrote about are all words that start with the letter F. How fancy, right? ;)
If you’re looking for some Christmas romances, I highly recommend the multi-author Heroes of Freedom Ridge series! By the end of this year, we’ll have 18 books for you to read. You can check them out HERE.
Now I’d love to hear from you! What do you love about Christmas romances?

Those four points about Christmas romances definitely sum up why I love them! It’s such a special time of year and reading books that capture that specialness is one of my favourite Christmas activities.

Those are all the things I love about Christmas romances!
Anita Yancey says
I like that the Christmas romances put me in a really good mood for the holidays.
Jaime Cole says
Reading a Christmas novel makes December more festive like watching my favorite Christmas movie does. Maybe our Christmas books will become so beloved that they’ll become a tradition to reread and pass along to others like watching It’s a Wonderful Life every year.
Cathy French says
Holiday romances are so much more special than settings in any other time of year
Trudy says
All four of your points, plus bonus points if it has something in the book about them going to Christmas Eve services, seeing a Christmas play at church, going to a living Nativity, or things that point to Jesus being the reason for the season.
Abigail Harris says
I love the setting, especially if it’s set in a snowy place. But I also love just reading good Christmas books that focus the real reason for the season with romance.

I am late (been a long day). I like reading about snow when it can be hot here (we are getting a taste of summer right now.). But there is something about snow, snow angels, and all that goes with the colder days. Also the smells you have are different to us. Hot chocolate is replaced by cold chocolate (or iced Chocolate) In many places the hot meal is replace by a cold meal or seafood and at the beach (not here), We still have caroling and christmas lights. Also many here go to a Christmas day service although some have a christmas eve service as well.
So I love reading about Christmas in different places.
Jeanna Massman says
And so it begins! Merry Christmas month!🤶🏻🎅🏽☃️🎄🎁Thanks for the holiday treat!❤️
Liwen Ho says
Hi Jenny! That is so cool. I know Christmas is celebrated during the summer in Australia, but I didn’t know about your cold chocolate and cold meals (although that makes sense lol). We also don’t have snow here in CA, so I enjoy reading about it in Christmas books. Thank you for sharing!
Liwen Ho says
Hi Jeanna! Yes, so it begins! :) Although in some stores, Christmas seemed to have begun in October. LOL Thank you for reading and commenting!

We grew up having the hot lunch with the roast turkey and veggies then plum pudding with money in it. Then the pudding stopped cos most didn’t really like it. and we had icecream deserts like the frozen cheesecakes, and an icecream cake and often a pavlova.
But it was too much for mum and the house was a hot house so we would have the roast meat but cooked the day before and have it cold with salads which made less work (not that mum needed to do it all but she did). and then desert was the icecream deserts which were easy as you just bought them done.
I do have friends who have seafood for Christmas (not a fan myself), and we have many here with beach homes (its a country hour away) and will go and stay Christmas to New Year as many businesses are closed between Christmas and New year. If Christmas Day was this coming sunday it would be about 100 so a hot meal isn’t what I want.
Angeline says
I love Christmas romances because the characters usually get together with their families and because I just love Christmas
Liwen Y. Ho says
Hi Angeline! Great reasons. :) Thanks for reading and commenting!

There was a time in my life before I became a Christian when Christmas was not very bright for me, I really did not understand very well why Jesus was the savior of all men if you had to be “good” to go to heaven (I went to schools Catholic) so I didn’t understand the Christmas Spirit of my parents, especially my mom (she loves Jesus although she wasn’t very clear why he was the savior, my dad just like Christmas carols hahaha).
After I became a Christian I understood it but I remember it was when I started watching Christmas romance movies with my mom from Hallmark, seeing stories where Christmas was so important, everyone was excited to decorate the tree and the enthusiasm started to really bond with the Christmas joy, Not exactly the Christmas romances in the book you were referring to but bear with me I didn’t even know Christian fiction back then lol.
Liwen Y. Ho says
Hi Lilly! I loved hearing your story of how Christmas became important to you. How fun that Hallmark movies played a part in it. Thank you for sharing!
Liwen Y. Ho says
Oh my, that would be super hot! I definitely see the need for salad and ice cream! :)
