When we first moved into our house two years ago this month, I was excited to see a rose bush with a single red bloom growing in our front yard. I looked forward to cutting roses and bringing them inside to enjoy. Unfortunately, that one bloom was all we saw. Things improved last year and we had five or six.
This spring, however, we’re seeing an abundance of gorgeous red roses. I just snipped five of them to bring in the house, and they smell amazing
I find it interesting that different colors of roses mean different things. Here are some of those meanings I found on Reader’s Digest:
Red – Love and Romance
Yellow – Friendship, Joy, Get Well
Lavender – Enchantment, Majesty, Love at First Sight
Pink – Love, Gratitude, Appreciation
White – Purity, Innocence, Sympathy, Spirituality
Orange – Desire, Enthusiasm, Passion
There are other gorgeous colors out there as well. Which one is your favorite?

Roses play an important, if small, role in my new book, SOMEONE TO TRUST. Chess bought Brooke a little rose bush when she first moved into her rental house. The rose bush produces gorgeous cream-colored blooms with pink-tipped petals. For Chess, it was a way to help her make the new place feel like home. But for Brooke, who’d been hiding feelings for him for a long time, it was a sign of hope that maybe someday Chess might feel the same way about her.
SOMEONE TO TRUST is the second book in the Life Unexpected series and releases May 20th. Here’s a little more about it:
Brooke Pierce thought she’d perfected the art of hiding her feelings from Chess, her best friend and surrogate brother. Then, in a moment of weakness, she reveals the truth. His immediate rejection shatters her heart. After years of waiting for something that clearly wasn’t meant to be, it’s time to break away. Knowing she needs to move on, she must rely on the faith that’s always sustained her.
Chess Summers can’t be the person Brooke needs, even though his heart demands otherwise. Determined to protect Brooke from his past, he’s refused to tell her about the family he came from or the painful way it fell apart. He’ll do anything to give her the future she deserves, even if it means keeping his distance to prevent history from repeating itself.
As they grapple with the changes in their friendship, they realize moving apart won’t end their struggles. Only by taking the journey together can it lead to the redemption and love they both so desperately seek.
SOMEONE TO TRUST is available for pre-order

I also have a free book available today! FINDING COURAGE is the third book in the Love’s Compass series, but can be read all on its own.
It takes courage to ask for a second chance…even more to extend one.
For Duke and Avalon McNeil, it was love at first sight. Married within months of meeting, their feet hardly touched the ground until the reality of their haste hit home with startling clarity.
Duke’s heart shattered when Avalon vanished for nearly three weeks, fleeing their arguments and misunderstandings. Now she’s back. He’s happy she’s home and safe, but he isn’t ready to risk everything again when their bond was so easily broken.
Avalon’s relieved to be home. She’s desperate to make peace between them, but returns with a secret. She can’t reveal anything to Duke until she proves to him she came back to restore their relationship.
As outside pressure continues to threaten Duke and Avalon’s fragile foundation, they must find the strength to prove to each other their marriage is worth fighting for.

I’m visiting family in Oregon today, but I will be checking
in here to read and respond to comments as often as possible.
Hi Melanie! I’ve always loved pink roses. I don’t think I’ve ever seen lavender, I’m sure they’re beautiful. I enjoyed your blurb and I look forward to reading Chess and Brooke’s story.
I’m really looking forward to reading Someone to trust. Thanks for sharing.
And I do love roses–any natural color.
HI Melanie. When we brought our house, there were rose bushes everywhere! We pulled out a couple (that were in the middle of the backyard!), and gave some much needed TLC to the others, which now bloom in abundance each spring- beautiful! I remember bringing our oldest son home from the hospital as a newborn, and a rare snowfall landing on the rose bushes:)
Your story sounds good, thanks for sharing about it.
Blessings:)
Hi Melanie, I love peach roses. I used to have roses at my new house but they didn’t last.
I still remember a gorgeous pink and yellow ‘Chicago peace’ rose my mom had in my childhood yard. Sadly, despite a fairly mild winter here, it looks like I may have lost two of my roses this year.
I love roses, too! We seem to have more luck with red ones! However, have to keep the rabbits out! lol
I am looking forward to reading your books….sound great to me, an avid reader! Have a nice visit with your folks.
Thanks, Jill!
Thank you, Priscila! I hope you enjoy Someone to Trust when it’s released! I definitely prefer the natural rose colors as well.
Your yard sounds gorgeous with all of the roses. Wow, seeing snow falling onto roses, I’ll bet that was beautiful.
I’m sorry to hear the roses at your new house didn’t last. I’m not good with plants myself so it’s a miracle that the rose bush we have is still alive. LOL Definitely no thanks to me. LOL
That’s too bad you may have lost your two roses over the winter :-( Oh, the pink and yellow rose your mom had sounds beautiful!
I’ll bet the rabbits can be a challenge. Lol Thanks, Jackie! The visit has been wonderful!
Welcome to Oregon! At least you’re getting nice weather. Enjoy!
I like them all. It depends on the mood I’m in for which color I like best at the moment.:) congrats on your new release!
It has been wonderful! We got out and went to the zoo yesterday. Perfect weather for that!
Thanks, Kimberly!
Congrats on your upcoming release and thanks for the free book!
I enjoy roses – my middle name is Rose – but they don’t grow well in our soil. Or maybe that I don’t lavish enough care on them because they’re not in my vegetable garden!
Roses are my favorite flower. I’ve never seen a lavender rose that I can think of, but that one sounds really pretty, esp since purple is one of my favorite colors. Other than that I love the red, white or pink ones.
Thanks for the book. Can’t wait to read it.
Thanks, Valerie! That’s neat that your middle name is Rose. That’s too bad they are hard to grow where you are, though. I am still shocked our rose bush is thriving since I’m not good with plants of any kind. Lol
Thanks for your comment, Andrea! I’ve not seen a lavender rose, either. It does sound pretty!
Thank you, Jessica! I hope you enjoy it!
We had lavender roses in our wedding. I’m kind of partial to yellow roses myself. :) Blessings on your writing, Melanie.
How pretty, JoAnn! Thank you!
