Writing view for the day
Hola! Jolene Navarro checking in from the beautiful Texas Hill Country. My writing view today. I was in San Antonio, so I stopped off at Panera to get some writing time.
I love it when a writer submerges the reader into a new world and you get to experience it from the character’s viewpoint. Clear Water, Texas is a fictional town in the Texas Hill Country.
I see setting as another secondary character. Setting shapes the people who live there and when someone new moves in that creates new interactions.
In the summer of 2017, I spoke with my editor and she thought I should try moving out of the Hill Country and try a new setting. I knew I wanted to explore the ranch country along the Texas Coast.
So I did. I moved down the road and created another town nestled. This one on the Texas Coast. Port Del Mar.
I’ve had so much fun playing in my new world.
The new series: The Cowboys of Diamondback Ranch is being kicked off with the first story.
The Texan’s Secret Daughter is the story of Elijah De La Rosa and Jazmine Daniel.
The endless horizon and rolling waves make for a great backdrop for them to find their way back to love.
The hero owns several businesses along the coast and works with his sister that runs the family ranch.

My favorite was inspired by some friends that own a pirate ship. How fun is that, right? So my hero owns a pirate ship and it makes a great setting for kids birthday parties and wedding proposals. I love that my hero is a pirate cowboy.

What’s your favorite type of hero…certain careers that you love seeing?
Hi Jolene! Thanks for sharing your settings in picture and in words. As a retired teacher drinking my morning coffee in a mug stating “Teachers make all other professions possible” and thanking teachers during teacher appreciation week, I was thinking of unsung heroes. This morning we had a planned 5 minute power outage. How would our homes run without utilities of electric, gas, water, and cable, whose workers seem to be taken for granted? Yet I do not recall a single romance with a utility worker. Or the plumber or electrician or well driller, propane deliverer. Not as romantic as being a cowboy, construction worker, lawn care/ gardener, fire fighter, police officer; but a behind the scenes quiet person making each of our lives easier 24/7. Recently in our area an electric utility worker came out at 2 am when our 95 year old neighbor lost a power line to his home in a winter wind storm. Also our water plant along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan is being renovated. The plant was already there when my family moved to Michigan in 1955. SW Michigan is blessed to have tasty clear water. So my heroes, which I would love to see in romance novels are utility workers. Best wishes.
Hi Jolene, thanks for sharing your photos- it is lovely to see your part of the world. I am working with my Literature students on setting at the moment and how an author/director/play writer uses setting- timely thoughts:)
I would have to agree with Renate- our oven died on Friday night and we are having a new one installed early next morning. Our local sparky (electrician) is great- reliable, comes early or late as needed, chats with the boys and answers their (million) questions- and meets a variety of people.
Blessings:)
You are sooooo, right! When a nasty storm hits they are some of the first responders that help us get our lives back to normal. I love the idea.
I agree with you both. One of those guys need to be a hero. I’ve never heard the term “sparky” for an electrician. I love it.
Wemble! Love reading your posts, especially since you are a teacher. I agree with Jolene that setting in a story is a character. As a teacher, I enjoyed discussing setting with my students. I also enjoy learning Australian culture. A “sparky” – how fitting. Reliable workers are difficult to find, let alone one who is kind to children. Best wishes.
Love the pictures and we need a hero.
First responder.
I love the photos especially the pirate ship. Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.
The pictures are great! It seems a really nice and romantic place to set a story.
Yes Jolene! Not only the local utility workers, bu when tornadoes or hurricanes hit – many workers leave their families for weeks to help those in other cities and states and sometimes even foreign countries. I checked on line – the Gas company has an appreciation day for their workers every year in March.
I love the photos, especially the ship!! What a neat idea, a pirate ship for parties!! I like stories with cowboys, first responders, really, any job!! I like that they have jobs!! Even the billionaires don’t just sit back and do nothing. I like stories where the main characters are giving back, maybe just to their own families, but they don’t sit back and do nothing.
Beautiful photos! Thanks for sharing. I like books with cowboys, ranches, fire fighters or smoke jumpers.
My favorite type of hero doesn’t have to be tall, dark, and handsome.
Hero’s come in all shapes and sizes.
I volunteer in the church library and have for 40 years.
I’d love to see more careers involving Librarians, whether they work in a Public Library, School Library, and a Church Library.
I am a retired special education teacher. I think there should be more education related heroes!
Thank you. :) Yes
Thank you Lucy.
I love spending time on the beach. Anybody of water ….I love the water. lol
I love first responder stories.
Oh, smoke jumpers! That would be cool. :)
Thank you, Linda. I agree we need heroes in education. :)
Love the idea of a cowboy who is a pirate!
hehe…me too. :)
I love cowboys ranchers firefighters all are hero’s Thank you sharing love the pictures!
