Today I’m sharing my book recommendation for Their Surprise Second Chance by Lindi Peterson. Our StoryChats @ InspyRomance podcast/YouTube episode with Lindi where we chatted about her book dropped yesterday.
Here’s the book description for Their Surprise Second Chance:
Could the past she kept hidden…
Renew an unexpected love?
After her adult son survives a plane crash, Nicole St. John believes the one person who can help him heal is his pilot father—who doesn’t know the twenty-four-year-old exists. Now Adam Hawk will do anything to support his son, even spend time with the woman who kept him a secret. But as old feelings resurface, can Adam convince Nicole she’s the final piece in their new family?
Narelle’s Thoughts:
I enjoyed reading Their Surprise Second Chance, set in a small town in Tennessee. Twenty five years earlier, when Nicole was a teen in high school, she’d had a big crush on her childhood friend, Adam. At the time Adam was in a relationship with Rebecca, his future wife. Adam broke up with Rebecca for a few short weeks, which was long enough for him to notice Nicole, and for them to make joint decisions that led to a secret pregnancy. Adam reunited with Rebecca. Nicole left town, carrying Adam’s rejection and the secret of Gavin’s paternity for the next twenty-four years.
The secret baby and past love triangle story set up creates complex family dynamics for when Gavin learns about his father and other family members. It’s a hot mess situation and a unique twist on the secret baby trope. Nicole believes God has abandoned her, and fears losing her son when the secret is revealed. Adam has his own issues and regrets regarding past decisions.
Trust and forgiveness are themes that are explored in the story as Nicole and Adam consider if they could have a second chance at love. I appreciated how the story touched on how Adam’s family were impacted by Nicole’s decision to hide Gavin’s existence. I recommend Their Surprise Second Chance to contemporary romance readers who like reunion romances combined with the secret baby trope that leads to complicated family relationships, and a strong faith element underpinning the story.
Many thanks to the author for the advanced reader copy.

Questions for you: Have you read Their Surprise Second Chance? Have you read any secret baby CCR books where the secret baby is a young adult when the secret is revealed? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I haven’t ready any. Though I can relate to the complications as on my father’s side of the family it some previously unknown/hidden children appeared and it certainly created ripples for their biological parents, adoptive parents and many family members. Luckily some were met without judgement but alas not all.

Hi Dianne, yes, family relationships can be complicated. If only people in real life could get along without creating a whole lot of drama. Thanks for commenting. 😊

I haven’t read Their Suprise Second Chance or any secret baby trope romances that I can remember – it’s a trope I find quite problematic, as it has such a big deception at the heart of the story. It sounds like Lindi Peters deals with the subject in a sensitive and insightful way though, and I look forward to hearing about it on Storychats, I always enjoy the podcast.

I have read some secret baby tropes, but I haven’t read this one yet! Karen Kingsbury has one that’s a secret baby to the other children, but the parents both consented to giving him up for adoption, and he meets his “real” family when he’s an adult, and so are his siblings. It’s a different take on secret baby, but it was a good book!

I haven’t read any secret baby tropes. I’m opposed to the father not knowing, but there are some circumstances that it wouldn’t be best for the baby. If the book is well-written, I wouldn’t mind reading it.
Debra Pruss says
No, I have not on both situations. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you.

I saw Lindi talking about this at the FB group (I enjoy that group) and then again on Story Chats. this would be an interesting premise. I normally not a big secret baby fan but this is a different take on it and it adds so much more to it.
I do enjoy LI books so will look out for it.

Hi Ruthie, Lindi handles the secret baby trope complications well and we had a fun discussion at StoryChats. Thanks for commenting. 😊

Hi Trudy, The Karen Kingsbury book sounds interesting. It’s a very different story dynamic with adult children. Thanks for commenting. 😊

Hi Bonnie, It’s a tricky trope for authors to navigate. There’s definitely circumstances where it’s better for the father to not be around. Thanks for commenting. 😊

Hi Debra, You’re welcome. Blessings to you 😊
