Today is the first day of fall in the northern hemisphere. My apologies to those who live in the southern hemisphere for the fall photo. You are celebrating the beginning of spring. It is also National Legwear Day here in the United States. This particular unique holiday spoke to me because I have a whole collection of fun and colorful sports compression socks that I started wearing a few years ago while I play tennis, walk, or exercise. I started wearing them after my doctor suggested I wear compression socks when I fly or go on long car trips. They makes my legs feel so good. Sometimes I wear them all day even when I’m not exercising or traveling.
Here are a few of the many I have. The fun colors often coordinate with my tennis outfits. On our recent trip I wore them while we hiked. I often get compliments on my socks or just comments. I had one lady gush over my pink flamingo socks. Here they are.
Here I am with one of my tennis teams. I’m the one in the bright pink socks.
The photo below was taken on our recent trip. Here I am in my socks at the top of Pike’s Peak in Colorado Springs. It was windy and cold. We even saw a little sleet. I’m glad I had on my socks because the shorts weren’t made for that weather.
Over the years I’ve worn tights, leggings and Christmas socks, but these days I’m all into my sports compression socks. Today you can celebrate your legwear. What will you be wearing? I think I’ll be wearing these for tennis.
I was trying to think about which one of my characters would be most likely to wear sports compression socks. I think it would be Whitney Hamilton, the heroine of A Place to Find Love. She plays golf and tennis. And today is also American Business Women’s Day, and Whitney is all about business.
I will give away an ebook copy of A Place to Find Love to one person who leaves a comment. I will draw the winning name on September 23, 2021 at 9PM MST.

Those are so cute! But fall will mean it’s time to hang up the flip flops and put on some closed toe shoes. Sad day!
Kathleen Mattingly says
Love the socks. Autumn is a season that I enjoy with all of the beautiful colors! But I’m not looking forward to winter!
Linda Reville says
I love your socks. I also starting wearing compression socks when may doctor suggested I wear them for long distance traveling. I have graduated to all day wear, because they feel good, but because may doctor recommended it. Your new book, A Place to Find Love, sounds very interesting and I can’t wait to read it.

These socks would be great for a friend of mine!
Lilly says
What cute socks! I have some really thick or woolen ones that I use to get up with slippers or that I wear to walk around the house in winter. Here spring has arrived but it is still cold.
Trudy says
The socks are cute! I went to Jo-Ann’s after breakfast with a friend yesterday, and ended up buying myself a pair of socks with hedgehogs on them. I’m in Florida, and we don’t participate in fall, though I love looking at pics like yours with fall colors!
Paula Marie says
I adore your socks. I, too, live in Florida, and our state declines to participate in Fall, lol!!!
Merrillee Whren says
Jessica, I am with you. Thankfully I live in southern AZ, and flip-flop weather lasts well into November.
Merrillee Whren says
Kathleen, I don’t look forward to winter either. It is my least favorite season.
Merrillee Whren says
Linda, thanks. I agree the socks feel really good.
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Lori, if your friend has to wear compression socks having fun ones is a plus.
Merrillee Whren says
Lily, thanks. Enjoy you spring!
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Trudy, thanks. Actually the photo was taken while we were visiting friends in the north Georgia mountains a few years ago. We live in southern AZ where we have about two weeks of fall. I love the hedgehogs.
Merrillee Whren says
Paula, thanks. We have a little bit of fall in December here in southern AZ. Winter doesn’t start until December 21.
Trudy says
I used to go visit my relatives in NW GA every October so I could enjoy those views!! Now, October is the start of my insurance business busy season!
Diana says
I love you crazy socks. I enjoy fun socks but haven’t tried compression socks. I love flip flops and have them on with long sleeves and long pants. Lol. I’ll have to give them up soon. I’m in Kentucky and it’s definitely fall weather but we don’t get the brilliant leaf color we did in northern Virginia.
Megan says
Your socks are so cute! I always like it when I can find cute designs or colors for clothing. Why should clothing be boring?
Natalya Lakhno says
Love your socks! They are adorable :) I have a collection too ;)
Renate says
Hi Merrillee! This Michigan retiree loves seasonal and holiday inspired shirts and socks. Have on my Cracker Barrel Fall Leaves 3/4 sleeves and fall socks. In 2015 for Christmas instead of regular Christmas Stockings, I purchased fun socks for the entire family, which held Christmas goodies and candies. Then everybody young and old put on their socks and we took a picture – guy picture and gal pictures. Grandkids loved them. I often gift socks for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. Summer in Michigan is Flip Flops or Sandals. Thanks for sharing a fun fall frolicy post. Love reading the comments. Best wishes.

I love the socks! I’ll probably don my Jane Austen socks before venturing out to Bible study tonight. ;-) Yay for fall and slightly cooler weather here in Tennessee.
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
I love the socks, Merrillee. My friend loves crazy socks, so I always get her a pair for her birthday and Christmas. One year my local writers’ group exchanged socks at our Christmas party. I found a pair on amazon that said writer and gave them as my gift. I should have gotten me a pair too.
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Diana, fall colors are fun, but that means winter, and I’m not a fan. It’s nice to look at the fall colors. We don’t get much around here in southern AZ. You have to go up in the mountains to see colors.
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Megan,
I completely agree. You have to have fun with your clothes.
Jessica B. says
I’ve collected a few pairs of fun patterned socks over the last couple of years and enjoy wearing them as an unexpected accessory. Right now I have on rubber duck socks. Today in SW Ohio we are getting our first real taste of fall with a rain and a high around 60.
Merrillee Whren says
Thanks, Natalya, I’m having fun collecting socks!
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Renate, that sounds like such a fun idea to give sock full of candies and goodies.
Merrillee Whren says
Amy, I’d love to see your Jane Austen socks. We’re having cooler weather, too. 92 instead of 102 or 110. :)
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Shannon, that’s another fun idea, exchanging socks at a Christmas party. I haven’t seen any writer compression socks. I’ve see them for nurses.
Merrillee Whren says
Jessica, fun, fun rubber duck socks. We think temps in the 90s instead of the 100s is cooling down here.
Ausjenny says
cute socks. I tend to wear shorter socks and did wear socks with cats on yesterday. today its meant to be a little warmer so will wear sandals. For us Spring started Sept 1 but the past few days have been cold. Monday was one of the coldest days of the year. Hoping the sun comes out today as I am over having to have a fire and the cold.
I like the longer days but have to say not looking forward to DLS starting Oct 3. I like that its light soon after 6.
Priscila Perales says
Love how colorful your collection is! :) Happy Fall Equinox!
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Ausjenny,
Yeah, you’re looking a spring. Warmer weather is on the way. I don’t like DLS either and thankfully, I live in a state where we don’t change. The only problem is almost everyone else does, so my kids on the east coast are 3 hours different from us now. In November they change back and will only be 2 hours different.
Merrillee Whren says
Thanks, Priscila. Happy Fall to you too.
Lelia (Lucy) Reynolds says
I love your socks.
Trixi says
My husband has recently started wearing compression socks for work, we bought him plain white or tan ones. He works at a resort hotel so he’s constantly on his feet plus he has diabetes, so these certainly help him! Our pastors wife is a nurse & recommended them to him because he told her how much his feet hurt during the day. He certainly wouldn’t win any fashion shows with them though, lol! But what a difference they make for him. I’m all about his comfort these days :-)
My socks are the plain white Hanes brand crew socks….but I do have some cute animal print no-show for summer time.
Merrillee Whren says
Thanks, Lelia.
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Trixi,
Compression socks really do make the legs feel better. I started out with the plan tan ones, but once I discovered the sports socks, I was all in with those.
Debra J Pruss says
Today I have been all into slippers with no socks. When I do wear socks, they do not match. I have one sock that folds at the ankle. The other sock is a knee sock that is usually stretched out at the top. The reason is I have to wear an AFO boot like cast on my right foot and lower leg. I need the high sock on so that the leather, plaster cast does not irritate the skin on my leg. I have tried to wear the knee sock on the other leg, but it just falls and is irritating. I have come to the conclusion that my pants cover my socks most of the time anyway. Thank you for sharing your fun socks. God bless you.
Merrillee Whren says
Hi Debra,
You’re right. If your pants cover your socks then no one sees them. When we travel by plane, I usually wear my black compression socks because no one see them under my pants. For hiking and tennis it’s fun to show some colors. My hiking pants have a zipper to remove the lower half and make them into shorts. That comes in handy when the weather is cool in the morning, but it gets hot in the afternoon.
Amy Perrault says
I love the socks. I enjoy playing tennis
Sylvain P says
