Life takes unexpected turns, does it not?
Trouble finds us when we least expect it.
Family squabbles test our grit.
We find love in unexpected places.
In my latest release, Broken Freedom, neither my hero nor my heroine are looking for love. They are both content with their lives as they are, even though they’re not happy.
Here’s an excerpt:
“What do you think you’re doing?” A woman’s voice raged at James Hamilton through the line.
“Director Thomas threatened to fire me if I didn’t work for you. Why would you do that to me?”
Now that the voice had lowered, he recognized it as Payton’s. “What? I never asked him to fire you. I just need a competent nurse semi-permanently, and you more than proved you are qualified today.”
“What exactly did you tell him?” Her anger hadn’t abated.
“That I wanted you.” That sounded bad. He clarified, “As my nurse.”
James swallowed. “And that I wouldn’t accept any other temp from his agency if I didn’t get you.”
“Why? Why does it have to be me? I don’t like long-term positions.”
“You are the best nurse I’ve ever had, including Andrea. Please, Payton. I need someone I can trust.”
She sighed. “It’s not like Director Thomas gave me much choice. I work for you or I get fired.”
“You could always quit.”
“Not an option.”
“Look, Payton. I know I was a bit… extreme, but you worked out great today. I apologize for this morning’s brusqueness. And even for threatening to pull my business from Mr. Thomas. I thought you and I worked well together, and you are the only temp who has ever come into my office and helped me do my job rather than told me how to do my job.”
“Now you’re just flattering me.”
She’d calmed down, but James still heard a little exasperation in her tone. He imagined her twirling the end of her hair as she’d done at lunch. Not a nervous habit because she didn’t appear anxious. It seemed more like a distracted habit. “No, I’m not. I’ve worked with a lot of nurses. You are, by far, the best I’ve ever encountered. You have a way about you that puts the patients at ease, even those like Phillip Chance. He thought you were serious, by the way, about breaking his arm if he touched you.”
“I was.” She sighed. “I’ll see you in the morning, Doctor Hamilton.”
Life changed for them both with their unexpected meeting. Have you ever had something unexpected happen, maybe that seemed like a step back at the time, that proved to be extraordinary? Comment below before midnight Friday, August 27th for a chance to win an e-copy of Broken Freedom.
Bondage comes in many forms. Freedom can be found in only One. Broken Freedom is a story of love and finding freedom from fear by trusting the One who came to “set the captives free.”
Payton Du Pont lives in a prison not of her own making, but one she’s too frightened to step away from. Five years after a brutal attack by her then fiancé, she still lives in fear of crowds and men in particular, except when she’s working as a temporary nurse for the doctors of Meadowsville, VA.
James Hamilton III, M.D. stepped away from the Hamilton business of plastic surgery to make his own way as a family physician. Left at the altar by his fiancée nurse, so she could marry higher in the doctor hierarchy, he’s sworn off dating nurses forever.
God brings them together, but they have to fight their fears to find a future full of freedom.
