Mike is my husband of forty-four years this month. We are best friends and I can’t image having anyone else as my husband. In 1969 at Christmas, Mike flew into Gulfport’s (Mississippi) airport to spend some time after Christmas with me and my family before we returned to Vanderbilt where I’d met him and both of us were going to college.
I knew that he was going to ask me to marry me. I met him at the airport, and I wouldn’t let him leave the place until he showed me the ring he had bought for me. I was so eager. But I ruined his big plans to propose in a grand fashion with my eagerness to see what ring he’d picked out. That’s okay. It didn’t change how I felt. He is the best man in the world for me, and we’ve had a great marriage.
How did your husband propose to you?

Margaret, I’ve been proposed to but didn’t accept. It wasn’t very romantic.I met him one night and he just asked me to marry him. I was in college and I wanted to finish school. He needed someone to be a mom to his kids. Just didn’t feel like that was the thing to do. I haven’t regretted it.

Congratulations on 44 years. It is wonderful to see marriages last that long in today’s world. We will be married 36 years in October. I read Her Hometown Hero and loved it. I would love to win Healing Hearts. Thank you for the chance.

Congratulations on your years of marriage! I have read a couple of your books and just loved them. But I have barely touched the surface of your many books. I would be thrilled to win any of your books and I do appreciate the opportunity you have given me. May God continue to use your writing!

Margaret, I didn’t know you attended Vandy. I didn’t really get a marriage proposal. My husband and I were discussing the marital problems of a couple we knew and he said when we get married and I replied when will that be. Of course a week later we were married. We had been together for four years, I had just finished nursing school so it all worked. It’s been 25 years and I wouldn’t change a minute of it.

I love engagement stories. Thanks Kathleen and Margaret for sharing. My husband proposed at a fancy French restaurant in Cincinnati, Ohio. I too also suspected that he would propose. We remember two funny things about that evening. The couple next to us looked like they were celebrating some anniversary and wearing the original clothes from that event. The woman was so pale she looked like they could have laid her out in a casket in her frilly blue gown. Secondly, my husband to be ordered the special and wondered why I didn’t order it, too. I said to him, “Do you know what you ordered. Him: “Calf something. It’s beef. It must be good.” Me: “You ordered calf brains.” We still laugh about it. And I said yes, and we’ve been married 38 years.
