In this world that often feels controlled by social media, authors tend to feel like they have a built-in platform or audience. However, several recent articles I read have indicated that self promotion via social media does not work.

Because writing and selling books is my business, I thought it was time to do some research as to where inspirational romance readers found their reading material.

How did you discover the last book you bought and read?

Did a friend tell you about a book and you had to go buy it and read it? Did you see a Facebook post and find it intriguing? Are you a member of a book club and found the book on a list? How did you hear about the last book you bought and read?

  3. I answered. It’s actually a tough question, though – I keep up with my favourite authors via FB, but often discover new authors through cross-promotion (from the authors I do follow) or through free Kindle books on Amazon.

  14. I answered the poll. It was through social media from an author. It was a request from an author to read a ARC and be ready to review it.

  15. I answered the poll and said another method not listed. The other method was selecting the next book in a series I was reading. I chose the series based on my enjoyment of previously read books by that author.

  16. I answered the poll “by author newsletter”. I am so busy working and mothering that normally I prioritize emails over social media.

  18. I commented. The last books I bought were either social media from friends or from non-author blogs or from browsing online bookstores. But the last inspy romance book I bought was from social media by the author.

  23. I answered the poll. I believe social media is the way to go. I have read multiple genres over the years. Recently I started reading Christian Fiction and found Avid Readers of Christian Fiction and from there found Christian Reviewers.
    This brought to many authors that have become my favorites. I also have gained many friends.

  24. I answered the poll. A lot of books I’ve heard about it is through different author interviews on various blogs and giveaways on both FB & author blogs. I just signed up for Twitter here recently, so I’ve also seen books featured by the authors I follow. Or suggestions by other authors on the locations mentioned. I love when authors promote other authors! It’s has a wonderful author “family” feel :-)

  30. I answered the poll. I keep tabs on a list on my local library’s website of new books they’ve acquired. Oftentimes I’ll find a new author by that means, then look up and purchase other books of theirs.

  41. I answered the poll based on the very last book I actually bought. But as a general rule, I get most of my books through authors, publishers or book club networks for review. I absolutely LOVED your Song of Suspense books!!
