Lately, with the various ins and outs of my life, writing new novels for Harlequin Love Inspired has taken a back seat to other projects, which means I don’t have as many release dates as I used to have. I know this phase of my life won’t last forever, but it sometimes feels like forever between books.
In point of fact, my next new release won’t be out until August 23rd. Though time seems to be flying lately and my new grandbaby will make her appearance soon, the end of August feels like forever away, especially because I’m so excited to share my story with you.
Which got me thinking about how readers feel about preorders. How many of you preorder the books you’re excited for? And why? Are they the next book in a favorite series? A book by a favorite author? A back-of-the-book blurb that really excited you to read the story? Something else?

A REASON TO STAY (K9 Companions #9; Rocky Mountain Family #5)
Caring for a little boy…
Brings him more than he ever imagined
Tied down with family and work responsibilities, Sharpe Winslow has always wondered about the world outside his small Colorado town. When newcomer Emma Fitzpatrick finds herself unsure about caring for the brother she never knew about, Sharpe and his rescue pup, Baloo, step in and take the boy under their wing. Sharpe knows he shouldn’t get close to Emma or Aidan. But maybe they’ll give him a reason to stay…
PREORDER NOW! Available August 23rd.
I preorder the next book in a series, book sets which will only be available for a short time and, because I am a pensioner and need to be careful, pre-orders that are offered at a special price. Especially if it’s the next book in the series, there is a sense of eager anticipation that is missed when it is only ordered once it is released.
I agree about buying preorders when they’re on sale. I also tend to preorder when it’s an author I especially like.
I often preorder books because they are part of a series I have enjoyed reading .
Great food for thought. I try to link books in series but write so each book can be read separately.
I preorder books to help boost sales numbers for authors who are writing books that I really want them to continue to write so I can continue to read them. Preorder discounts are also an incentive.
Thanks so much for supporting your favorite authors! We really appreciate that.
I pre-order the next book in a series so that I’m sure to have it when in becomes available. I also pre-order books from a blurb on the back of a book, if it really grabs my attention, and also if it’s a new-to-me author that I want to be sure I remember to get.
It’s always exciting to wake up one morning and have a new book in your library. I often forget I preorder and then it’s a nice surprise.
I’ll pre-order if it’s part of a series and author I love. I have pre-ordered book sets with many different authors, but usually has an author I love, but also gives me a chance to read new authors. There have been a few rare occasions that I pre-order from a blurb I’ve seen on social media.
I enjoy preordering sets with a variety of authors. As you said, it’s fun to find new favorites!
Hello today. Yes life can get super busy at times. How exciting waiting for your grand baby. Congrats on your next book coming out. When I pre order a book it is mostly because it is from an author I really love reading. Or a series I really want to read
Thank you! We’re all kind of hanging on hold here with Emily due any second now!
Hi Deb! Even in retirement life get busy, but fun with the grandkids. This weekend our oldest 3 grandkids and the grand dog spent the weekend, so their parents could help a friend move from Ohio back to Michigan. Going to need 3 naps today to recuperate. LOL
I preorder books for many of the reasons already stated: I love the author. Special discounted price. For a multi author series, to get acquainted with new authors. To boost the authors numbers. I love the series. Preorders gives this retiree something to look forward too. A nice surprise when it appears in the early sleepless mornings in my Kindle account. So I don’t forget to support my favorite authors. So many reasons.
Thanks and best wishes.
I hear you on the naps! One grandkid lives with me and I watch the other while his mom works. And #3 is on the way!
I don’t pre-order ebooks, as I get them from Amazon, and I only use giftcards on Amazon, so Amazon won’t let me pre-order with a giftcard. And, they won’t let me review on there since I only use giftcards. I’ve spent way more than $50 on there already this year, but it’s their rule! I do, however, pre-order a paperback sometimes. I pre-ordered two this year, both the next in a series I have the previous books in. One series ends with the book I’m currently reading, and the other one will have another book added either the end of this year or beginning of next. Once I know for sure, I’ll probably pre-order it, too, though I may just wait til it hits the store. It depends on if I’d order enough to get free shipping, lol!!
That’s an interesting (and kinda stupid!) rule that you can’t preorder books with a gift card. And they won’t let you review, either? Because that makes (no) sense. **rolling my eyes**
I don’t usually pre-order, as a student who doesn’t work yet I don’t have much money for personal expenses and there are too many books already available to read with detailed reviews so I usually choose one of those instead of pre-ordering.
But if I could I would do it because the book belongs to a saga, trilogy or duology or because the author has my total confidence that I will like the book as well as having an interesting synopsis for me of course.
I personally will go for the authors I know and trust when it comes to preordering so I know I’m getting a good read.
I don’t pre-order because of financial restraints but I often recommend them to my public library so it counts as a sale somewhere. I also put them on my Amazon wish so I can remember to buy if I get a gift card or there is a sale at some point. However, Harlequin rarely has sales on ebooks that are all platforms.
Harlequin likes to use their own website for sales. However, they are experimenting more on Amazon, at least, with eBooks. Keep an eye out!
I don’t preorder books I just wait for them to be at our library.
Do you ever ask for a specific book at your library, or just read whatever is available?
the library has a lot of the love inspired and harlequin heartwarming books those r the books I really like. I never have requested a book at the library.I get most of my books that aren’t library books from goodwill and I have too many so we just had a garagesale and I sold 54 books I buy too many books my room is like a library.
I don’t usually preorder because I try to get them at my library first. I may preorder a book if there are preorder goodies that I want.
Oh! Swag! Great point and an excellent idea for us authors.
I usually don’t preorder but when I do it is the next book in a favorite series
That seems to be the most common theme here. Great to know.
I’ve started pre-ordering books from authors that I really, really like.
I enjoy that, as well. Audible often sends me preorder info on authors whose books I’ve listened to and rated well.
I usually only pre-order books from my absolute top 5 favorite authors. Sometimes, I will pre-order Kindle books from some other authors though.
My top five authors is always changing. I guess I’d be doing a lot of preordering!
don’t pre-order
Good to know!
I rarely pre-order, only because I don’t have the money to buy every book I’d ever want. If I had unlimited funds for them, I wouldn’t hesitate, lol! But when I do, it’s mainly because it’s the next book in a series or it’s the next book by a favorite author. And usually it’s for the ebook because they are more affordable for me :-) That and lack of adequate bookshelf space…haha!
Oftentimes Baker Book House will have pre-order specials….40% off and free shipping…..which I have taken advantage of a few times. The books are around $10 at that special, and I can afford to get a couple of them. They’re always ones written by top favorite authors that are next in a series.
I know pre-orders help authors out so much & I wished I could do it more often!
Correction….actually I think Baker Book House always has the pre-order special on upcoming books.
I love the idea of preorder specials!!
No, I don’t pre-order.
Good to know!
Congratulations on your granddaughter coming! Grands are such a joy. It seems like August is a long way off now but it will be here faster than you expect-especially with the new baby! I always look forward to the end of summer where I do NOT like hot weather! I used to pre-order occasionally from favorite authors and/or series I was reading. I have not done so in a long time now. This is due to both money issues and my schedule. I help out many of my favorite authors with different proofreading, Beta and/or ARCs so have the benefit of already reading their books. I will still buy one of these books out of curiosity on how the final product comes out but not very often. The biggest blessing for me is to have a small part in them. I also have oodles of great books waiting for me to read, between my Kindle and computer downloads, far more than I will ever get through. If I were to pre-order now it would most likely be a physical book. I like to share books with a couple of friends but neither reads ebooks…yet. I was dead set against them myself just a few years ago but am sold now so am working on my friends!
I have literal bookshelves of TBR, and then they invented eBooks…LOL!
My home is far too small to hold many books. Between my different files and my Kindle I have far over 5,000 books though! Even reading 10 books a month it would take more than 40 years! I have read that many books in a month before but most of them we ones I was working on, not pleasure books. And with my age (& body’s condition) I honestly hope I hope I don’t live that many more years. I’d be older than dirt! Yet I can’t seem to stop downloading books….😉
Oops, most of them WERE ones I was working on & I must really hope to repeat it. Pretty bad example for someone who proofreads! I think my brain is ready for bed…
I like to pre-order so I don’t accidentally miss out on my fave authors’ latest!! Pre-orders are usually a bit cheaper, and also help the authors gauge the interest in their stories.
Great point! That information would be especially helpful for books in a series.
Congratulations on new grandchild and book release. I’m sure the joy of arrival/release will be worth waiting for. I don’t preorder as most vendors don’t permit it without purchasing by credit card, whereas I use gift cards/PayPal.
I think that makes no sense, especially if you’re using an Amazon card at Amazon.
I preorder if it is a favorite author or the next book in a series. Thank you so much for sharing. Congratulations on your new granddaughter. God bless you.
Thank you! We’re on pins and needles over here.
I am late but I do preorder occasionally for certain authors but often not that far ahead otherwise I forget what I have on preorder and I need to keep an eye on what I am spending. I tend to use gift cards or will buy amazon gift cards at a discount but I need to know I have the money to pay before buying. (especially from America as the dollar isn’t the best for me in Australia).
If I have a little extra money, I do love to pre-order a favorite authors books. Especially if it is part of a series.
I only have one book and pre-order right now, but I am eagerly awaiting its July release date.
I usually pre order books by my favorite authors and the next one in a series I’m reading!
I’ve pre-ordered sometimes from authors like Aspen Faraway but usually I just wait till it comes out & order that day.
I don’t pre-order books but I do order at midnight when they come out on Amazon to buy.
Currently, I can’t preorder books, but when I could, it was usually because of the blurb, the author, a great deal, and/or a long-awaited book.
