I always think it’s so romantic when I hear about a real life couple splitting when they were young and finding each other again years later. As a result, I’ve written quite a few reunion romances. When the hero and heroine have had a past relationship that didn’t work out, there’s instant conflict. And romance novels thrive on conflict.
A Texas Holiday Reunion is my first Christmas book. It’s book 3 in my Texas Cowboy series set in Bandera and it’s a reunion romance. Resa McCall was a side character in the previous book in the series. Her broken heart was hinted at, so it was time to explore her story and the source of her heartache.
Resa designs rustic log furniture for her parents’ store. The log furniture thing came about during our vacation a few years ago. My husband is a Texan and has family in the Hill Country region. During our last visit, he wanted to buy a cowhide rug so we stopped at a log furniture store. As I strolled through the showroom filled with everything from dining room tables and beds to futons and desks made from logs, inspiration hit.
Colson’s dad is business partners with Resa’s parents, so they’ve known each other a long time and went to school together. Since he was a bit of a wild child and she was a Christian, they ran in different circles. Until in their early twenties, when he came to work at their parents’ store. She was a good influence on him and he became a Christian.
They fell in love. But after a whirlwind romance, he left her and married his ex-girlfriend. Six years later, her parents are on a cruise and her ranch foreman faces surgery. Colson, now widowed with a daughter, returns to fill in as her foreman.
Resa’s design office is in her barn, which has a picture window on Colson’s world as her foreman. With her heart still smarting, she didn’t know he had a daughter, so things are complicated between them from day one. Add to that a big secret about his daughter and the fireworks begin.
All with a backdrop of Christmas, my favorite season. To celebrate, I’m having a special giveaway.

His Christmas Homecoming
With her foreman out of commission, Resa McCall needs horse trainer Colson Kincaid to run her family ranch through the holidays. But having the handsome single dad back in Bandera, Texas, is unsettling. Colson broke Resa’s heart years ago, and she can’t risk getting close again. Still, working with him and bonding with his sweet little girl is making the ranch feel merry and bright. Being at Resa’s side stirs up emotions Colson thought were long gone. But he has a powerful secret that could keep them apart forever. Can Colson give Resa the one Christmas present that might finally bring them back together—the truth?

She gleans fodder for her fiction in rural Arkansas where she spent her teenage summers working the concession stand with her rodeo announcing dad and married a Texan who morphed into a pastor. I enjoy second chance and reunion stories. I have been following you on all your sites, but have not yet read one of your books. These sound like really good books, and I look forward to reading them. I enjoyed this post.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hi Wemble, I’m glad we ran into each other here. I had so much fun the last time I was here, I begged to come back.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks so much for hosting me, Narelle.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks shadowblossom. It was fun to write. So much conflict to work with.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks Iraines. I know a couple who dated in high school. His dad was kind of snooty and she didn’t fit his standards. His parents ACTUALLY moved to get him away from her. Ten years later, they reconnected and are happily married.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks for having me, Narelle. Like I said above, I begged to come back and you heard my plea.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks Lucy. Glad you popped in.
Shannon Vannatter says
Me too. This is my third book with reunion in the title. Though several of my other books are reunion too. My critique partner told me once that she didn’t think there were that many high school sweet hearts in real life that end up together. I know several though. I married mine a year after we graduated.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks for following me, Becky. It’s good to know someone actually pays attention to my meanderings :)
Laura says
Sounds like a great story! Thanks for sharing

Thanks for stopping in, Laura. It was a fun book to write. And a fun post.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks Shelia, you’ve been such a loyal supporter. You’ll never know how much I appreciate you.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hey Cecelia. Thanks. I saw you at the conference in Dallas. I was at a vendor table with my friend. But we were busy with people and you passed on by.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hi gobers,
I’m glad I intrigued you. I’ll have to tell my husband I’m intriguing. He’ll get a laugh out of that.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hi Diana, thanks for reading. There wouldn’t be any writers if there weren’t readers.
Margaret says
Definitely intriguing!
Valerie Comer says
I married my high school sweetheart 37 years ago! And I know quite a few others. Sadly some have divorced…
Valerie Comer says
Welcome back to Inspy Romance, Shannon! I’m in the midst of writing a reunion romance myself right now. It occurred to me it wasn’t a trope I’d explored much in all my stories. :)
Shannon Vannatter says
High school sweethearts rock. Most of the ones I know are still married, but a few didn’t make it. It is sad.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks Margaret. Glad you stopped by.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks Valerie. I love this blog. Many moons ago, I was invited to join it. Back when y’all were first starting it up. At the time, I was overwhelmed and turned it down. I’ve regretted that. This is my 5th reunion romance. I think.
Priscila says
Thanks for sharing about your new book. Reunion stories are always challenging, especially ones that involve children.
bettyrobertson says
I am a Texas and always enjoy Texas based stories. Looking forward to this one!
bettyrobertson says
Actually I am a Texan, not Texas. :-)
susanmsj says
I am also a Texan and I love reading stories set in Texas. This sounds like a great book.
Linda says
This book sounds like one I’d love to read. I like stories set in Texas and Christmas stories. I hope I win.
I’m not able to get out to the library easily.
Jessica B. says
Sounds like an interesting read. I haven’t read many reunion romances but I have enjoyed the ones I’ve read.
Shannon Vannatter says
True Priscila. But the child adds even more conflict. My poor characters.
Shannon Vannatter says
I knew what you meant, Betty. I tell everyone Texas is my second favorite state. We visit that branch of family every few years and always have the best time. I’m pretty sure I could happily live there.
Shannon Vannatter says
Thanks Susan. Texas rocks. I really enjoy researching places for book settings when we visit my husband’s family there.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hey Linda. What could be better than Texas and Christmas wrapped up in a book? This is my first Christmas book and it was fun to write. The only thing is you really can’t do snow. I’ve been to Texas when it’s been really warm and when it’s been really cold during Christmas. But snow? Not so much.
Shannon Vannatter says
Hey Jessica,
I love taking long ago issues that kept a couple apart and then blowing it all up in their faces. I guess I’m kind of mean to my characters. But I’m nice to them in the end.
Walter Daniels says
I look forward to reading it.
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
I’m glad Walter. Actually, I am too. I always carve out time to read my books once they’re in book form. In the initial writing, I love each book. Through the editing process, after reading it so many times, I go through that – this is the worst book I ever wrote phase. When I read it in book form – I’m like, oh yeah, I love this story.
Alexa Verde says
A Texas Holiday Reunion sounds great! Thank you for the giveaway.
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
Thank you for popping in, Alexa. I love Christmas books too. So reunion romance Christmas story was doubly fun to write.
Andrea B. Brooks says
I love Love inspired books and this one looks great. thanks for sharing this.
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
Hi Andrea, I love LI too. The first ones I read were by Deb Kastner and Lenora Worth. I’ve been hooked since. And almost swooned when I met Lenora at a writer’s conference. She was a great encouragement and always knows who I am when I’ve seen her since. Swoon.
Brenda Anderson says
Hey, Shannon, welcome to Inspy Romance! I found (and bought, of course) A Texas Holiday Reunion at my local Walmart. Always so much fun to run into friends there! :) Congratulations on another release. I can remember when you and I were newbies, just learning the business, and now look at you! Hugs from Minnesota.
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
Hey Brenda. You rock. Brenda and I are critique partners and I learned so much from her on character body language and emotion. She’s the master. One of these days, we need to rendezvous at a conference again.

Thanks for following my tour, Linda. It was a fun book to write. It was odd to write a Christmas book during spring, but it was fun.
