If you saw my blog post the other day, you read that my family and I are moving to south Texas by the end of the month. The last time we moved was three years ago, but apparently I’d forgotten how much work goes into the whole ordeal.
On Friday, we rented a small U-Haul trailer to take the first round of boxes and other items to our new house. We knew what would normally take us 3.5 hours to drive would take longer now that we were pulling a loaded trailer. What we didn’t take into account was the crazy wind Texas threw our way. Seriously, the whole drive down was like fighting against an ocean current. In the end it took us just shy of 5.5 hours to get to our destination. Needless to say, we were all exhausted and glad to get out of the car.
We spent the night in our new house. While the kids seemed to sleep well, my husband and I tossed and turned on our cots. Between the weird new house sounds, the sprinkler system coming on just outside our window at 2 a.m. (I didn’t know we had a sprinkler system lol), and thunderstorms half the night, it was nearly impossible to sleep.
Saturday morning, we took care of some things in our new house and town before heading back again. Unfortunately, the wind was still going strong making it an exhausting trip. Hopefully, when we take another trailer later this week, the wind will have eased up or disappeared. Thankfully, two weeks from today, all of our stuff should be moved, and we’ll be unpacking and getting settled. I can’t wait! Meanwhile, I’m looking forward to resting up a little today.
I hope you all find Sunday to be a restful start to this new week.

HI Melanie, strong wind does not make for a smooth drive!! We have gone from beautiful sunny days to Saturday’s 11 degrees (celsius), rain and strong winds, which continued today- a shock to the system! I’m hoping that sprinkler system was outside…not inside… the house?!!
Blessings:)
Wow! I really felt I was battling the wind right along with you on your move. I certainly hope the wind will not be a factor on your next trips.
Hi Melanie! Glad to hear you and your family are safe after your difficult moving trip experience. Hope the next trip will be less windy. The winds were howling all day yesterday in the Midwest and Grayling, MI received 13 inches of snow last night. Moving is stressful enough without unexpected complications. Three times we moved during Midwest winters. Twice on Valentine’s Day. January 1979 when we moved from Michigan to Chicago, Illinois it was a blizzard. The trip to Chicago was fine. Clear roads and we unloaded and set up house. The return trip to Michigan to pick up our 10 month old son from my parents with the couple from my home town took over 5 hours (normally a 2 hour trip). We were not able to return to Illinois for a week. As stated moving is stressful on a good day. You will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers. Hopefully by summer you will be settled in your new home and be able to relax and smell the roses. Best wishes.
Lord bless you! We relocated recently to a new state. It is exhausting and exciting. We’ve had a lot of wind in our new location. I can’t imagine driving a trailer in it. I’m still looking for things and wondering where they went.
Bless you and your family as you make the move! Keep safe!
Praying the rest of the move goes smoothly, Melanie!
Happy Sunday. Glad the move is going smoothly. I hope after it’s all said and done you and hubby will take a well deserved break to just relax.
wow, thank goodness the kids could sleep. a water sprinkler in the house? well that is different. hope your next drive goes so much better. prayers for safety.
I’ve got to move my family and myself in a couple weeks, so I completely understand what you’re going through. I live in the high desert in Southern California, and we have the Santa Ana winds we constantly deal with. They get so crazy you would swear your roof was going to tear right off. Good luck with your move!
I live near Austin. The winds have been crazy this weekend!
We moved three years ago from St. Louis to about 2 and a half hours south. It took from 7:00 to nearly 11:00 Through a blinding thunderstorm with tornado warnings about halfway here. Then we had to at least get the cots out so we could bunk! Those cots are not the easiest thing to sleep on.
Hopefully it will be better soon! Blessings.
What a trip. Just think, you get to do it a few more times! Your ambitious. Lucky too. I wish we were moving somewhere warmer. I wish you good luck on your new house.
Praying for rest and refreshing for you .
I hope the rest of your move goes well. I like living close to the Hill Country. It’s so pretty.
Hi Wemble! Wow, I’ll bet that has been a shock to the system. I hope the rain and wind goes away soon. And yes, the sprinkler system was outside. LOL
It looks like we’re going to make our official move a couple days earlier to avoid the wind and thunderstorms predicted. We’re getting there, though!
Wow, that’s crazy you got 13 inches of snow. Yuck! Where’s spring? Oh, moving during a snow storm would not be easy, that’s for sure. You’re right, moving is stressful under the best of circumstances. Thank you for your prayers!
I hope you can get the rest of your things unpacked, Diana. It does take a while to get all settled to where you can find everything!
Thank you, Jackie!
Thank you, Autumn!
Thank you! We’ve been going non-stop today, but are putting our feet up and watching some TV tonight.
The water sprinkler was outside lol yikes thank goodness it wasn’t in the house!
Thanks, Nicole. Good luck with your move as well. I hope it goes smoothly!
Hopefully they die down soon!
Paula,
Wow, that sounds like a horrible drive with the thunderstorm and tornado warnings. Yikes! I’m glad you made it there safely!
Yes, we’re almost there! I am happy to live somewhere warmer. Thank you!
It is beautiful!!
Thank you, Lucy!
