Happy last Sunday of August!
I’m struggling to wrap my head around the fact that, this time next week, we will be in September. Around here, the last week of August usually means final trips to the beach and the ensuing insane traffic that accompanies said trips. This year, that mad rush to the shore got bumped up a week, as most of the schools near me start back up tomorrow. (This will make my kids happy, since they feel greatly put upon that we started the first week of August. They’ll feel better in about two weeks when I decide we’re ready for a day or two off to celebrate six weeks of school though.)
I’m not so much a beach in the summer girl. I much prefer the beach in the fall or winter. In fact, I love a winter beach with the wind whipping up off the ocean and the salt stinging your cheeks. Best part? Much smaller chance of sunburn.
What’s your favorite time to visit the beach?

Hi Elizabeth. Today was a wintry blast- snow on the mountain, hail and rain- I would be surprised if it topped 6 degrees outside! I love the beach in Autumn- still warm during the day, but without the strong winds of Spring and harsh sun of Summer.
Blessings:)
Renate says
Hi Elizabeth! Living in SW Michigan, I enjoy visiting the beach all year around, except when it is very hot or during tourist system (Memorial Day to Labor Day). We have seen the decline tourist since school started in Illinois and Indiana.
MH says
Though I’m not a summer beach person, my kids adore the beach during the summer…so we try to go when we can during the summer vacation time.
gobers2013 says
I love the beach but not so much in the wintertime. I’m more a summer gal! Hope you and your kids will be able to get back soon.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Our weather has been so lovely lately, I don’t envy your snow. :) But you captured the beach in autumn perfectly!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
The lake beach is so nice! We camped there a couple of times during college outside Chicago.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
The things we do for our kids, right :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
The summer beach is popular for sure :) We may take a little jaunt when public school gets going.
Patty says
We have had some lovely weather for August around here. Low to mid 80’s for a few days now!
I do like the beach in the summer, but I usually sit on the balcony or by the pool with a book not actually go out on the beach=)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Our weather has been lovely too! I think I’d enjoy the beach in summer from a balcony, too :)
Diana says
I love the beach anytime. We usually all, kids, and grand kids, go once in the summer. I did enjoy walks on the beach in the winter, but haven’t been able to do that since I was a teenager, when I lived near a beach.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
We aren’t all that close to a beach, either.
Valerie Comer says
An ocean beach? Any time of year! We aren’t big on lying around on white sand looking for a tan, though. Give us crashing waves, a salty tang in the breeze, and tide pools, and we’re happy! We avoid our local lake beaches in summer (too hot, too noisy, too crowded) but we enjoy walking them in the other seasons.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Ocean beaches are the best, I think. I don’t tend to include lake and river beaches in my brain anymore (though when we lived near Chicago, I did.)
Margaret Nelson says
I’m privileged to live 10 min. from the Pacific Ocean, so we can visit the beach all year long! It’s often nicer in the fall because it is often foggy in the summer.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
How nice to be so close! I imagine the dog in summer is pretty though.

Summer
Elizabeth Maddrey says
That’s certainly when most people prefer the beach, so you’re in good company.
Arletta Boulton says
I don’t need to have a super hot day to go to the beach but it needs to be comfortable enough to be able to lie on a towel and read/sleep/read and eat without bugs, or needing to be wrapped up.
Paula says
No beach by me! I prefer weather in moderation. Spring and fall. Nice to be able to read on the porch.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
The bugs drive me nuts. There needs to be a good breeze to keep them away :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Reading outside is so nice.
Kimberly Rose Johnson says
I like the beach any time it’s not raining. On the Oregon coast that seems to be about half the time I go there. I’ve heard it’s great in the fall, but the last time I went there in the fall it rained the entire time I was there. Summers are nice, but a little crowded for my liking.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
The coast in the NW is a different animal than I think most other beaches — but it’s so pretty! I don’t think I’d mind the beach in the rain. :)
Trixi says
I live on the Oregon coast and can visit the beach/ocean anytime. I avoid it during summer with all the tourists and what-not. I love our slower season here in the Fall/Winter. I especially love watching winter storms roll the waves around, smell the tang of salt water and hear the roar of the ocean. There’s just something peaceful about it.
And yes, I’ve learned to love the rain since we get so much of it :-)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
That sounds…so delightful.
Trixi says
LOL, Kimberly! I’ve always said we get two seasons, rainy and not rainy…lol!! I’ve learned to love the rain since we do get so much of it during our Fall/ Winter/ Spring season. Even the rain on the beach is beautiful :-) I definitely agree with it being too crowded in the Summer. That’s about the only time I don’t care for living in a small coastal town in Oregon. Give me the more laid back slower off-season anyday!
Kimberly Rose Johnson says
It doesn’t stop me from walking it for sure. It would just be nicer if I wasn’t getting soaked. Lol
Trixi says
I suppose that’s just part and parcel for the course….lol! We’ve developed web feet don’t ya know ;-) (haha)!
Jessica B. says
I love going to the beach in late September. I’ve never been to the the beach in the winter but someday I would like to visit then. I would like to see a northern beach with snow on it sometime too.
Ellie says
I enjoy visiting the beach in the fall. The water is still warm, but it’s not so hot to sit on the beach. I’m happy if I even need a light hoodie to sit on the beach!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yes! Jeans and a sweatshirt are the best beach wear :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh! I haven’t seen snow on the beach — that would be fun. I bet it’s beautiful.
Laura says
I Love the beach year-round! I don’t like when it’s too crowded, so I try to avoid that period in summer.. but otherwise I could go anytime. :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Are there not crowded times in the summer? I haven’t found those on the beaches near us :)
Jackie Smith says
When we were younger, we visited the beach during the summer. We don’t live near a beach though. in NE Georgia.
Laura says
Everybody goes to the beach on the Holidays and January here because classes start early in February and then it’s crowded just on weekends..
Alexa Verde says
Hi, Elizabeth! It’s almost always warm here, so any time is a good time to visit the beach. Of course, except before or during the storm or hurricane.
Susanne says
Anytime the weather is warm :)
Karen Hadley says
Morning
