Happy Sunday!
Yesterday here in the States was Veterans Day and, more internationally, Remembrance Day. I don’t have a ton of veterans in my immediate family. My husband was, briefly, in the Army (having done ROTC in college, he did 4 years active duty thereafter). He never wants to be identified as a veteran, though, saying he didn’t really do anything useful and it was more of a means to not having a load of college debt. I feel like it still counts, but I don’t push. Beyond that, my paternal grandfather served on a mine sweeper in the Pacific during World War II, but I believe he’s the only one.
My husband’s family has many more military folk (hubby’s grandfather in WWII, and then both his father and uncle served in Vietnam.) If we go back farther (which in my family is easy to do as both my parents have been doing genealogy since before I was born), I can pick out Civil War soldiers (both sides — even some brothers who fought on opposite sides), as well as Revolutionary War. Living here in the Washington D.C. area, many of our friends and acquaintances are active duty military.
I have such appreciation and respect for the men and women who serve their country and I hope that they feel that every day of the year, not just on the days set aside on the calendar.
If you have veterans in your family, I’d love to hear about them in the comments!

Hi Elizabeth:) We had the privilege of Remembrance Day as part of our Church services, it is always moving to remember the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus so that we can be free, a special service.
I am unaware of any former soldiers in my family, my father does not talk about his side of the family, so I don’t know much about them, and Mum’s parents came out from the UK after the war ended- makes me realise I need to go and do some serious family research!!
Blessings:)

Hi Elizabeth, I am a proud USAF brat, wife and grandmother also, Army grandmother. I have 2 Army grandsons, officers serving closer to home just this year. One granddaughter Air Force just reassigned right at home with my oldest daughter in Idaho. So, thankfully they are close for awhile. On grandson after serving six years is now in the Army Reserves. My son and second daughter are Air Force vets. My son served for 24 years. My daughters husband is also USAF vet. My husband, and father USAF 20 plus years each. My grandfather served in WW I. Like you my ancestors fought in the Civil War. Confederate Calvary unit out of middle TN was all relatives on my dads side. Also, a number served in Revolutionary War. One deserted the Hessians to serve in the Revolutionary War. Two nephews are Navy vets and my dads half brother served in Coast Guard for 35 years. Yes, my family has served our country long and proudly and it continues. Thank God for everyone that has served.

Thank you for your inspiring post Elizabeth about Veteran’s Day also being international Remembrance Day. For most of my life my parents military service was kept a secret. As a German Americans remembering Veteran’s Day in the United States seemed unpatriotic, since Germany was the US’s enemy. Both my parents served during WW2. My father was captured by the Russians and was in a prisoner of war camp in Finland for 18 months surviving on potato peels. His father served the German army in WW 1 and died of his wounds 2 months before my father was born. My mother served as a Red Cross nurse at the Battle of Kalingrad. She had nightmares from the bombing and helping dying soldiers. My uncle at 18 was killed defending his home in Was Prussia during this battle. When we became US citizens in 1963, we denounced our German citizenship. That is why my parents were embarrassed to acknowledge their military service on Veteran’s Day.
My husband is doing his genealogy and we know his father served in the navy in the Pacific during WW2 and there are relatives, who also served during the Civil and Revolutionary War. Some of his cousins and his bother-in-law served in Vietnam.

My father and my husband were both in the Navy. My dad served in Texas, working at a shooting range. My husband was on the aircraft carrier, USS Eisenhower.

Wemble, I love that your church service tied it in to Jesus’ sacrifice! Such a good reminder. :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
What a long and wonderful legacy! I’m so glad your grandkids are stationed close to family for now. That’s always a delight.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Renate, what a lot of service to ignore. I can only imagine how hard it was to come to the States and renounce all your past. My grandmother was from a German speaking home, and while they were already in the US, she mentioned once or twice that those were days when they were a little more careful.
Thanks for sharing!

My brother Michael served in Cuba. My father was called up to serve in the Korean War, but he had to have his appendix removed instead. My cousin served most of his life in Germany. Three other cousins served in the Air Force and Navy, one of them going down with the USS Oklahoma. His remains have recently been identified and we are waiting word from the government about a military funeral. One of my uncles served in the Army. My husband’s father served in WW II as a bombadeer until he was given a desk job due to his airsickness. He also had an uncle in the Air Force. Then we both have great grandfathers who served in the Civil War, and they have some interesting stories.

Cool! Thanks for sharing!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh wow. You’ve got some fun (and not so fun) stories. Thanks for sharing.

No veterans here in our family but so grateful for those who serve our country.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I love that no matter if you or your family served, you can always just be grateful. :)

I would say your husband counts. It takes all of the men and women doing there part. but it sounds like you are wise not to push. I had a great great grandfather that was in the civil war as a sharpshooter. All I can lay claim to now is one of my nieces husband. I too am so grateful for all those men and women.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
We have a sharpshooter as well – I think he was post civil war though (maybe pre. Can’t recall.) He was a Texas Ranger.

I’m in existence today because of the military :-) My mom’s dad was stationed in Europe in WWI. He met a Swiss girl in Germany, married her, and my mom was the result. Then, in WWII, my mom and dad were both in the military and met in Washington, DC. She was from Michigan, he was from California. They met in church. The interesting thing is that my husband’s parents had almost the same story – his dad was from California and his mom from Indiana. She wasn’t in the military, but was in Washington, DC, teaching. They also met in church, and both sets of parents were married in the same church in Washington, DC (but didn’t know each other). So I’m very thankful for all the veterans in my family.
(P.S. I just noticed it’s a good thing I use my last name, as we now have another Margaret commenting!)

I love this, Margaret!

My daddy is a WWII Veteran. Many of my uncles served as did both of my brother in laws. One of them served in Vietnam. My brother, son in law, and step sons also served.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh, what a rich family history!
Paula Shreckhise says
My Dad was aWWII vet. He served in China, Burma , India theater. My hubby was in the Navy for 6 years during Vietnam but we only went as far as Guam for four of those years. My uncle was in WWII also. Today’s generation needs to have an appreciation of what others sacrificed in order for them to have their freedoms.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
So true! I think some do, but as with any generation, some don’t.
Nancy K. says
My dad was a World War ll veteran. My hubby is a disabled Viet Nam veteran. Our son in law and daughter just moved to their first base in Las Vegas which is over 2,000 miles from us. This is a life long dream of our son in law. He had wanted to join the Air Force since he was in high school. His parents didn’t want him to join so he went with the flow. Then a few years ago he was determined to enlist in the Air Force once and for all. First, he had to lose 80 pounds which he did. Earlier this year he went to Basic Military Training then to Tech School. Our son in law is 38 so he made it in, just under the age cut off. This Tuesday, they will move into their assigned house on base. They are so excited for this. They have been living in the base hotel until their house was ready. We are so very proud of both of them.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Congrats to your son-in-law!
Margaret Nelson says
And I forgot to mention that my husband is a veteran too!
Trixi says
My Dad was in the Navy but never seen wartime. My grandpa served in the Army in WW2 over in Germany. I don’t think there are anymore of our family who served in the military.
Happy SONday everyone!
Wemble says
Renate, what a great family history you have- it would make for an excellent story that I would enjoy reading:)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Thanks for swinging by, Trixi! And even without seeing war, serving makes someone a veteran. It can still be an incredible sacrifice.
