I’m delighted to share some photos of Western Canada with you over the next few weeks in our Sunday Editions! My husband and I recently took a trip to the Pacific coast, where we spent a few days on Saltspring Island and then a few days on Vancouver Island.
Today’s photos are from Saltspring, which is one of the Canadian Gulf Islands just north of Washington state’s San Juan Islands. We rented a cottage at a resort that covered an entire (small!) point. I could get used to seeing the ocean from my bed! This rustic Adirondack chair was beautifully situated out on the point to enjoy a view of harbor seals and birds. No matter how long I sat here and stared out, though, I didn’t see any whales.
If you’re a winner, you should have received an email from the author in charge of the giveaway. If not, please email us at: prizes at inspyromance dot com.

Hi Valerie, beautiful photos. It sounds like you had a great holiday, pity about absentee whales. Saltspring Island looks like it would be great for some paddling and mountain biking.
We spent the day doing some landscaping work- before winter really sets in!!
Blessings:)

Hi Valerie! Inspiring photos of a beautiful island. Why is the island named Saltspring? Is the spring salty? Looks like a beautiful place “to be still and reflect on God’s beauty and goodness.” Wishing you a beautiful and restful Sunday. Thanks for sharing.

My friend lived in Anacortes in the San Juan Islands. I also was thinking yesterday about my trip to Vancouver Island.
Glad you got a few days away.

I love when you share photos of the places you have visited! Since I cannot get there myself, I feel like I had a visit through you!
Valerie Comer says
Yes, on both counts! There are three long, deep harbors on Saltspring, and with other islands close by, there is a lot of sailing and paddling in the protected waters. Also yes to cycling, since much of the island is of similar elevation (unlike most of the nearby islands, which are steeper).
Here, of course, our yard work is preparing and planting gardens!
Valerie Comer says
It is a beautiful place, for sure! It seems the island has been known as Saltspring (alternatively written as two words, Salt Spring) since the mid 1850s. Yes, there’s a spring of salt water on the north end of the island, where a spa now exists. Of course, there are plenty of springs with sweet water, too!

The San Juans and the Gulf Islands are part of the same chain, just divided by an international boundary! I’ve visited several of the Gulf Islands, and each is amazingly unique considering their proximity.
I haven’t been on Fidalgo Island (Anacortes), but I’ve seen it from the water. :)
Valerie Comer says
Yay! That’s my purpose for sharing photos like these, to take everyone along on a little vacation!

Lovely Adirondack chair picture/view :-)
Valerie Comer says
I sat there for quite a while one evening!
Sherri G says
That chair sure looks inviting, Valerie.
I’d like to thank Jackie Castle and InSpy Romance for the Be Still, My Heart boxset I won. I was very excited when I read the email.
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
Beautiful setting. I could sit in the chair for hours. If it wasn’t too hot, that is.
Becky Smith says
I agree that they are beautiful photos! It would be fun to enjoy while reading a book!
Valerie Comer says
Oh, I hope you enjoy the boxset!
Valerie Comer says
That’s the beauty of the north Pacific coast. The weather is (nearly) always temperate!
Valerie Comer says
I was too busy watching for whales! I read in bed instead LOL.
