In late May, my husband and I took a road trip east into southern Alberta and Saskatchewan. Although we’d been to those Canadian provinces before, many times, this time we took the road less traveled, and found some fun new country — new to us, anyway! We spent the first night camped at Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park in Alberta. It’s just north of the Sweetgrass Hills in Montana, which you can see in the background.
This area is home to North America’s largest collection of ancient pictographs and petroglyphs, but they were very faint and hard to discern, at least in the evening light. We were more captivated by the fantastical rock shapes (known as hoodoos), where erosion has taken its toll on the sandstone along the Milk River. We clambered all around among the hoodoos for nearly an hour at dusk — thankfully we didn’t see any of the rattlesnakes that love to bask there on sunny days! As you can see, the surrounding area is very flat, so it’s quite a surprise to suddenly begin the decent to the river amid these rock formations. Very cool spot!

My husband and I have been to Sweet Grass, Montana. We met our Canadian friends there as we didn’t have passports at the time. Then the 4 of us left in our RV to visit our family out west.
What a great time we had!
Sounds like you have great memories of the same area!
What a fascinating place.
