Is anyone else dreaming of a White Christmas? One day I’d love to travel to the northern hemisphere and wake up on a snowy Christmas morning.
It’s not feeling like December in Australia because we’ve had a mild and wet start to summer. I’m not a fan of humidity and summer storms, although a little bit of rain is always welcome.
Dorothea Mackellar, a famous Australian poet, described the extremes of Australian weather in her poem, My Country, written in the early 1900’s. Here’s a short excerpt from the poem, and she recites the whole poem in the YouTube clip below. A small piece of trivia: The high school I attended in Sydney was named after Dorothea Mackellar.
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

Hi Narelle, this week certainly has demonstrated the accuracy of Mackellar’s poem. Here in Melbourne we have certainly had some rain! We have family in North Queensland who have gotten a deluge leftover from Cyclone Owen- I just pray that the rain is falling inland.
Blessings:)
Blessing this Third Advent Sunday, Narelle! No snow in the north country (Michigan), and it doesn’t sound like the Midwest will be having a White Christmas this year. The waters of Lake Michigan are still too warm. While the temperatures drop to freezing at night, yesterday it was in the high forty’s (8 degrees Celsius) during the day. Lots of fog the last few days. While we had some snow the end of November, the oak trees are still clinging on to their leaves and some farmers were still harvesting corn and soy last week. A very unusual warmer and wetter than normal fall. Best wishes.
It’s been a week ine here in Florida…lots of rain!
Here in SE BC, Canada, we had a couple of days of snow earlier this week. Of course, on the days I had errands to run and a granddaughter to pick up from school… The snow has stuck around but there’s not much of it. I’m sure that will change. I’ve lived in this region for most of my adult life, and we’ve ever NOT had snow for Christmas twice.
So, Narelle, when you decide on that northern hemisphere Christmas, coming to visit me would make it a pretty sure bet for snow!
Joy to the world! Feeling blessed and sending blessings your way ….
I grew up in Michigan (northern USA) so experienced many a white Christmas morn. I now live in South Carolina, so we don’t get to many of them down here. My husband loves and is fascinated by the snow and wants me to take him to Michigan one winter!
We had snow here in WV but now it has been raining for several days and melted it all. Merry Christmas ??
Hi Wemble, I was travelling interstate late last week and all the east coast flights were delayed due to the storms and wet weather. The rain is much needed, but it would be helpful if we didn’t have an entire months worth of rain fall in less than a day! I’m not sure if enough rain has fallen in the bush to break the drought? Blessings :)
Hi Renate, Your current weather is typical of our mid-winter weather (frosty mornings and high single digits Celsius during the day). It’s fascinating how it’s the lake that dictates your weather. I’ve often seen steam rising off a nearby small lake in winter when the water is warmer than the air temp. I’m not missing the foggy winter mornings we typically experience. Best wishes. :)
Hi Paula, Florida sounds like Australia! We haven’t seen this much December rain where I live in years. :)
Hi Valerie, yes, visiting you in Canada for Christmas is a fabulous idea! I imagine snow can be a nuisance in your part of the world, whereas it’s an exciting novelty for us when we see it fall in Australia. :)
Hi Natalya, Blessings to you! :)
Hi Patty, I totally understand your husband’s fascination with snow! Northern Michigan sounds lovely. Enjoy your South Carolina Christmas. :)
Hi Lucy, Where I live we’re lucky if snow stays on the ground for a few hours! Enjoy your Christmas in WV. :)
Hi Narelle late commenting.
We have had heat, then heavy rain and humidity and now warming up for a couple of days. it seems to be a few hot then cooler.
Hi Jenny, the humidity has been hanging around here in Canberra, too. Next week we’ll start to see temps more consistently in the 30’sC. Enjoy your summer weather. :)
