Through January, I’ve been sharing snowy winter photos of the area where I live in southeastern British Columbia, Canada. Today’s photos are a bit different, though. Every once in a while we wake up to hoar frost. It’s basically fog that freezes and forms ice crystals on every surface. When the sun shines on hoar frost, there is almost nothing more beautiful! The world is as bright as you can imagine, and snapping cold. It’s an amazing experience and one I would truly miss if I had to live somewhere without it!
Yes, I truly love winter and snow. About the only thing I don’t like about winter is driving on slippery roads. We tend to have somewhat mild winters where it might snow, turn to rain, then freeze, with resulting lumpy frozen slush on the roads. Or just slush. I like winter a whole lot better in the past few years since I don’t have a day job in town that requires me to get there no matter what!

Hi Valerie! Beautiful pictures of a wonderful phenomenon. As a Midwesterner I also enjoy winter and snow, as long as we keep power. Been a mild winter. Yesterday we received our first major snow ( about six inches) and over night the temperatures dropped to the teens. But the roads have been plowed so we are enjoying the beauty of pristine snow. Best wishes.

Hi Valerie, beautiful photos- I especially like the one of the mountain ash berries. We have a type of eucalyptus called mountain ash- quite different to your Canadian tree:)
We have had a couple of cooler days, it is going to heat up again this week though. I really feel for people out west as it has not dropped below 37 degrees celsius (overnight) in some places for nearly a month- it is definitely summer here!!
Blessings:)

Ah, beautiful photos, Valerie! Thank you for sharing again! I grew up in New Jersey and loved winter so much!! It’s a long and complicated story of how I ended up in Florida, but NJ will always be home for me, and Winter is very much missed!!
I agree with you on the driving in it though…very scary!
Valerie Comer says
Ah, yes, keeping power is always helpful. Our biggest problem without power is freezing water pipes — a much bigger problem when we had livestock! On the farm, we do have a generator so we can keep the essentials running. We also heat with gas (ours doesn’t require power — no fan) and have a gas range, so we stay warm and can cook, although not bake/roast. And we have four kerosene lamps for light! So we get by, and there are stories to tell afterward…
It’s been mild here, too. We’ve had several inches several times, but there’s been no accumulation in the valleys. Yet.
Valerie Comer says
You mentioned your mountain ash once in a comment, I think? Because I looked it up and found how different the Aussie tree of the same name is!
37 at night is crazy. I can barely handle that for a few weeks in summer during the day. Way too hot for this Canadian!

“Life” is full of long and complicated stories. Maybe that’s why humans resonate with fiction? One seemingly small choice different here or there, and our whole lives are changed! We are full of “what ifs,” the stuff of fiction.

Yes! God created beauty to turn our hearts to Him.

Nice! We haven’t had any fresh snow for a while, and there’s not much left on the ground. I’m sure it’s coming, though!

We had ice here this morning but when the sun came out it melted it all away.
I live in the Sunshine State. In the winter we have ice, frost, and even snow.
Thanks for entering me in your giveaway.
Valerie Comer says
I know Florida gets its cold spells, but I sure don’t think of it in terms of snow or ice! Thanks for stopping by.
Janet Estridge says
We’ve had snow only twice but the conditions have to be just right.
Our weather has been hot for a few days, cold for a few days, hot for a few days, cold for a few days.
Tues. and Wed. the temps will be in the 70’s for the high.
Thurs. rain will bring in more cold weather.
Fri. Sat. and Sun. will be cold and the first of the week will be warm again.
I wish that Mother Nature would make up her mind.
Valerie Comer says
Wow, sounds like it!!!! Crazy.
