Back again for another of the lovely San Antonio Missions! Today we’re visiting our third stop – and by far the most complete – Mission San Jose.
This mission still has the complete wall around the area – and the walls are more than just a wall – it’s more like a square of dwellings that all face the central lawn and the cathedral. Spotted along the edges were hornos (horno is Spanish for oven, and that is in fact what they are – but there’s a distinct look to the horno that you’ll find in the Southwest.)
Mission San Jose was our favorite stop on the mission tour and, if you find your time is limited and need to just choose one to see, this is the one I would highly recommend as it gives you the best picture of what mission life would have been. (Honestly? Maybe even over and above the Alamo. I’m not sure I’m allowed to say that because the Alamo, but I’ll admit to being a little underwhelmed by that one and San Jose was more what I expected.)
And – on a completely separate note – happy Father’s Day to the men in your lives!

Here you can see a little of the adobe covering and art that was originally all over the cathedral walls. I’m not sure if they’ll restore it, but it would be a completely different look if it was still there.

Hi Elizabeth, I’m enjoying your posts featuring San Antonio. I’ve visited once, RWA in late July, 2014, and it was hot and humid. I was only there for 4 or 5 nights, and I didn’t have time to do much sightseeing. I did discover I’m very allergic to ragweed, and I know for next time to buy antihistamine as soon as I arrive, lol. Returning to Texas at a cooler time of the year is on my travel wish list. :)
Our weather was so lovely – I’d been braced for it to be hit, but it wasn’t. I’ll take a misty drizzle over hot and humid any day. And ragweed is the bane of my fall. Yuk.
I’m enjoying traveling to TX with your posts!! Mission San Jose looks great!! Isn’t it amazing how they did such glorious detail work with tools that we’d think are primitive! That’s one thing I loved about Savannah, the oldest homes have some of the most intricate scroll work and iron work inside and out!
Yes!! Mud and basic tools and yet they made such amazing structures that have lasted. It’s a delight to get to visit them.
Thank you for your post. I really liked the format. I appreciated the links to last weeks posts and what to expect next week.
Thank you so much for sharing San Antonio with us! I just read a book this week that is set there and your photos came to mind while I read it!❤️
You’re welcome! The main format for Sunday is courtesy of Valerie – she keeps us organized :)
How fun!!
Thank you so much for your information on the Texas missions. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to see them but maybe someday.
I love reading online about things I’m unlikely to see in person.
I have always been interested in The Alamo but have read a couple of books featuring some of the missions infact I am fairly sure this one was featured. I would love to visit in person some day.
How fun that you’ve read books where they’re featured! Were they historical?
Yes I think it was Susan Page Davis but not sure it was in a series of 6 with 3 authors. I know one featured a mission in Texas.
