This weekend I’m daydreaming about lying on a beach with the sun warming my skin. ‘Warming’ being the important word in that sentence. In south-eastern Australia we’re being blasted with icy polar weather from Antarctica. It’s snowing in the mountains above 1000 metres (3280 ft). Where I live in Canberra on the Southern Tablelands, our elevation is 577 metres (1893 ft). I’m writing this post at 1pm on Sunday, and I’ve included a screenshot below from my weather app. (7.8C is 46F and -2.1C is 28F)
Fortunately we have ducted heating that keeps our home warm. I’m wearing layers of clothing, a knitted scarf around my neck, and my cosy slippers on my feet.
It’s definitely indoor reading weather here. I like to curl up on the sofa with a warm throw, a print book or my Kindle, and a hot drink. Hot black tea or hot coffee or a hot chocolate is my preference. Sparkling water with a twist of lime is my preferred summer beverage. What’s your beverage of choice this weekend to accompany your reading? Have you had an opportunity to read at the beach?

Hi everyone, My apologies to those of you who received the Sunday Edition post email twice. We had a technical glitch with the original post that wouldn’t allow any comments to be posted. But we’re good to go now. :)
Renate says
Hi Narelle! Beautiful beach weather in SW Michigan, but not for swimming due to rip tides and under tow. Unfortunately not everybody heads the lifeguards warning and red flags and a 13 year old tourist drowned yesterday. I can never read at the beach to busy people watching – kids, families, waves, and seagulls. Usually read on the deck. Less distractions. Enjoy your weekend.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Renate, I’m sorry to hear about the tourist. I grew up near the ocean and was taught how to read the wave patterns and pick the locations of rips. Our beaches were most likely to be closed due to blue bottles (jellyfish stingers) that come along with the warmer currents. Enjoy reading on your deck in the warm weather. :)
Trudy says
I live 15/20 minutes from the beach, but I prefer to read in the comfort of air conditioning!! I don’t go to the beach much, as I burn fast, and I’m a melanoma survivor. I’d rather go late and walk on the beach; however, it’s been in triple digits here with the heat index, so I’d still prefer to be inside in the A/C!!!
Diana says
I like to read outside but it was so hot I was reading inside after gardening in the morning.
Betty says
Iced tea, no matter the weather!
Natalya Lakhno says
Hi Narelle! Warming is the key word lol it’s so so hot that I don’t want to be outside – 104 degrees…
I would love to have a combination of yours and mine…something in between :)
Drink-Vanilla Latte!
Kerri Norrod says
I live in Texas. It is very hot, so I prefer to read inside.
Ellie says
I prefer your winter weather to the 90+ degree temperatures we’re having where I live in the U.S. :) I have read at the beach, but sometimes I get distracted by the waves – they’re just so mesmerizing to me. It’s not much that can distract me from a book! Keep warm!
Ausjenny says
We have had a cold blast haven’t we over the past few days. We hadn’t had frosts like we did a few weeks back but the wind has been so strong. I had to ride my bike to church yesterday as my normal ride is away and I thought It would be good for me as it was fine weather (sort of). going was ok as it was only a light wind but coming back it was blowing a gale and I was riding into it. I was almost going backwards at times and I am still getting use to riding again.
I love my fire as for me I don’t think any other heating compares to a wood fire. I not sure I have a favourite beverage to drink when reading. I don’t drink anything hot. Don’t like coffee or tea.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Trudy, yes, air conditioning is what you want during extreme heat. We have ducted evaporative cooling, which is much cheaper to run than a/c, but the downside is it doesn’t work on the rare days when we have high humidity. Enjoy reading indoors in the a/c :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Diana, I’m glad you were able to garden before it got too hot. Enjoy your reading indoors. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Betty, Iced tea is refreshing. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Natalya, yes, a combo of our weather would be lovely. :) 104 is too hot for me!
Narelle Atkins says
I forgot to add that latte is my favorite type of coffee.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Kerri, I’ve been to Texas twice (late July & September). September in Dallas was very warm, but July in San Antonio was crazy hot! :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Ellie, yes, there’s something calming about watching the waves roll in. I agree – I’ll also take the cold weather over 90+ temps. Stay cool and happy reading. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Jenny, I’m happy we have some cloud cover and the overnight temps aren’t falling below zero. The last few days have brought howling winds. You did well to stay upright on your bike! Enjoy getting back into cycling. :)
Lori Smanski says
Absolutely indoor weather. Stay warm. Here in the midwest USA it has been in the 90’s and so very dry. LOL right now I would change weather with you LOL
Ausjenny says
True cloud cover or even rain means the overnight temps are better. its that wind chill.
Narelle Atkins says
The wind chill is horrible. When there’s snow on the Brindabellas, we feel the icy winds here.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Lori, yes, I’m doing my best to stay indoors as much as possible. LOL I dislike the heat and, if I have a choice, prefer the colder weather. Stay cool. :)
