You know the saying, right? When life gives you lemons…
Feels like there have been a lot of lemons handed out lately. I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of lemonade. The reality is, I love lemon-flavored things, but not actually lemonade.
So I thought we could talk about lemony goodness that isn’t lemonade. For example: the lemon bar. These are wholly underrated, in my opinion. That gooey lemon on top with the flaky buttery cookie underneath? And the dash of powdered sugar to balance the lemon? Divine.
We can scale it back some and just talk straight up lemon curd. My mom was a big tea lover. Not just the drink, tea, but the meal. And so we would frequently have a tea with scones, clotted cream (not lemon-flavored but amazing) and lemon curd. Mmm.
I also like lemon butter cookies. Again with the powdered sugar (Maybe I just like that? No one knows.) (Also, I just this week tried a tea that was called lemon butter cookie and the tea was much like said treat. And considerably lower in calorie. Definitely a win.)
Lemon meringue pie? Yes.
What about you? Are you a fan of lemon-flavored things?

I am not a fan of lemony treats… but a slice of fresh lemon in a glass of rainwater works for me!
Ausjenny says
Not a fan of some lemon treats but I do drink lemon cordial (its like koolaid i think) also lemonade here is more like your 7up. I actually think your lemonade is like our lemon cordial. its not fizzy and its concentrated and add water.
I do like lemon drops hard candy. but when it comes to lemon tarts, or curd etc not a fan.
Renate says
Hi Elizabeth! I love lemony treats. During the winter and allergy season, I drink Bigelow’s Lemon Ginger tea with extra lemon juice and honey. Lemon bars are delish. Local bakery makes a lemon tart – mini version of lemon meringue pie with not as much meringue on top. My favorite – quick and easy to make at home is Creamy Lemonade pie. 5 oz. of canned milk, 1 small package of instant lemon pudding, (mix together), 2 – 8 oz. cream cheese – creamed with 3/4 cup of frozen lemonade, then add pudding mixture and mix. Pour into a graham cracker crust. Delish and refreshing in the summer topped with raspberries or strawberries. A family favorite summer drink is raspberry tea lemonade with club soda. I enjoy the tart and sweet. Give me lemons and I will make a lemony treat. Best wishes. Nice gentle rain in Michigan this morning, which is helping my newly planted pots. Enjoy your day.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I do love water with lemon, too!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I enjoy 7-up (though will admit a preference to Sprite even though it’s basically the same).
And lemon drops are good candy!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
So I will be adding those ingredients to my next shopping trip. It sounds amazing.
We’re overcast here today – not sure if we’re getting rain or just the clouds.
Dianne says
Love lemon, especially lemon curd, ahh now I’m hungry! Actually I love anything citrus. Need to do without the sugar now, especially given iso-butt development here, lol.
Meant to try zucchini-lemonade iceblocks (I think you guys call them popsicle) made from zucchini, homemade lemonade, ginger and mint, but it’s freezing cold right now so it can wait until next summer. Hopefully we can have a break from lemons soon :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Ha! Iso butt. That’s an apt description.
And those popsicles sound intriguing – I may have to give them a go too. We’re just starting to hit the warmer (hotter) days as summer starts here.
Jessica B. says
Admittedly I am a chocolate lover above all alse but I do enjoy lemon desserts on occasion and fresh-squeezed lemonade is hard to beat. My sister-in-law makes a really good lemon cake with lemon curd and lemon frosting.

I do like lemony treats! I like lemonade in my tea, which is why I usually order Arnold Palmer drinks now, sweet of course! Publix has a lemon cake which is wonderful by itself or with vanilla frozen yogurt!!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yum! Thanks!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I do love chocolate. Lemon with chocolate can be good too!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Hubby is a big fan of the Arnold Palmer. I am so so with it. Don’t mind it but don’t seek it out.
Lemon cake. Yum.
Valerie Comer says
I’m not generally a big lemon fan, and the fastest way to ruin a tall glass of ice water is to stick a lemon slice in it. Yuck. ;)
Can we still be friends?
I’ve been making a lot of Boost Juice this spring with lemon juice and baobab and stevia. It hits the spot and is a good immune booster. Since I’ve been off sugar for 2.5 years :O I’ve found most lemon stuff doesn’t taste as good with other sweeteners. I do miss lemon bars but not enough to eat sugar.
Paula Marie says
I love lemon! I make the best lemon bars, never been able to find any as good as mine😉. Now I have a recipe for mini lemon cupcakes that are glazed in lemon that people adore. My boss hates all things lemon except for my cakes, he asks for them all the time!
Margaret Nelson says
Well, I’m just the opposite from you, Elizabeth… I love lemonade, but don’t really go for any other lemony desserts! The house my husband grew up in, and which now belongs to his nephew, has a Meyer lemon tree in the backyard that’s been going strong for over 50 years. We go once a year and pick enough lemons to squeeze 5 gallons of lemon juice :-) Then we enjoy lemonade all summer, plus I love lemon juice on broccoli, spinach, fish, etc.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Haha. Yes we can. I’ll just keep the lemon slices for my own water.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Ohhh. Those cupcakes sound amazing.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Haha! More lemonade for you! I do love Meyer lemons though. So tasty.
Kathy Schnitz says
I love anything lemony. And I’m definitely going to try your pie recipe, it sounds amazing! And I’ll get to eat it all myself as my husband doesn’t like lemons.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
That’s the best! There is very little sweet that my hubby won’t eat. But then that’s better for my waistline.
Judy says
I love lemon. My favorite eatery makes a lemon croissant, croissant filled with lemon curd. Lemonade cake is amazing. Lemon tarts, lemon cooler cookies, lemon bars, and lemon chocolate bars. Yes, chocolate and lemon are a refreshing combination.
Grumpy Cat had a meme: If you want to make lemonade, Life had better give you sugar and water too.
Paula Shreckhise says
I love lemon treats, lemon anything. The sourer the better. When I was a teen, I used to buy a lemon, cut it in half and put it under my pillow to suck at night! Unfortunately my stomach can’t take too much acid at my age especially in the evening.
Kimberly Rose Johnson says
Oh my goodness, those are some of
My favorite treats. I love every about lemon and the scent is fabulous.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I loved Grumpy Cat!
The lemon croissants sound amazing.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Now that’s a dedication to lemon! I do like the peel – it weirds out hubby, but I’ll often eat the lemon slices, peel and all, when I finish my water.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
The scent is so refreshing!
Lelia (Lucy) Reynolds says
Mmmmm…..I love lemon anything except lemonade gives me acid reflux. Now I think I will go make lemon bars.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I wish I could sneak one. :)
Lincoln says
Lemon bars are always welcome. I am also blessed with a friend from church who makes the best lemon meringue in the world (entries from other worlds not having been evaluated yet). Our local Sam’s Club (DC area) sells a confection called Lemon Bites that definitely rock the lemon. A college friend of my wife had his own lemonade recipe where the secret ingredient, in addition to sugar, water and fresh squeezed lemons, was the juice of one lime. Without question, I am a sweet and sour fan!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh we have those lemon bites! (We are dc area too). They’re deadly
Susan Johnson says
I am a big fan of lemon. My daddy used to make a lemon slice ice cream that was wonderful. I have made it a couple of times but it just isn’t the same. I am sure it tastes the same, but he didn’t make it.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
That sounds amazing.
denise says
I made Lemon Meringue Pie on Saturday.
Penelope says
Yes. I’m a tart lover, rather than sweet. So I love tart lemon meringue pie, tart (not sweet) lemon bars, and when I was young I created lemon shakes from vanilla ice cream and a dash/cpl tsp of Real lemon juice (either a squeezed lemon or from the non-sweetened green bottle). – stirred in a tall glass. Yum!! I still make one occasionally. It’s very tart but deliciously refreshing. :D I’m not a lover of lemon aid, either. It’s generally too sweet but a non-sweetened lemon sparkling water cuts the thirst. Mmm.
Ausjenny says
I was trying to think of our equivalent I forgot about sprite. That is what we call lemonade. We do also have some fizzy drinks (soda’s) that are a lemon flavour. Solo and Lift are two names for them, it’s also called lemon squash.
