In June’s Sunday Editions, we took a tour of the Kootenay region of British Columbia, Canada, from previous years. In July, we’re narrowing down to recent camping trips, still in The Koots! This spot is along Hawkins Creek. Jim and I took our new-to-us travel trailer out for a weekend shakedown cruise to see how everything worked. It’s a beautiful spot, but the no-see-ums were out and nasty!

Reader Gathering
Did you know Inspy Romance hosts a Christian Romance Reader Gathering group on Facebook? Toni Shiloh is hosting a takeover there this coming week. Join us… but don’t forget to answer the questions for admittance!
Here’s the other end of the meadow from our trailer. As you can see, this isn’t a campground. There are lots of little spots like this in the region where it’s okay to camp, even without official designation.

Now you know why I enjoy camping! I have my own chef. Jim rarely has time to cook at home, but he does most of the cooking while we’re camping. I do the planning, the prep, and the cleanup, so it’s not like I’m slave-driving him!

Gorgeous!

What a beautiful area!! I love spots like that, where there aren’t buildings and concrete!! There are so few spaces like this any more!! Definitely on my bucket list!!
Valerie Comer says
It really is!
Valerie Comer says
Western Canada, British Columbia in particular, has a lot of this type of area. The steep mountains don’t make concrete jungles easy to build!
Renate says
Enjoy being an arm chair (bug free) traveler of British Columbia with the inspiring Valerie Comer. Nice camper and a very handsome chef. Enjoy.
Paula Marie says
I am with Renate….bug free arm chair traveling at it’s best, thank you, Valerie!!
Valerie Comer says
I’m rather fond of my chef as well! ;)
Valerie Comer says
Bug bites let you know you were really there… sigh. But smells, sounds, and 360º vistas help with that as well. :)
Paula Marie says
Hahaha…I could live without the bug bite reminder though🤣
Lincoln says
I have smells, sounds and 360 vistas right here in my computer room but none of them nearly as good as yours in The Koots! Thanks for sharing. Have you considered a romance where the two meet competing for the same remote camping spot? Who gets the view? Who gets to look at the back end of an RV? How many weeks does this scenario play out at seemingly random camp sites? When do they realize that their hearts are drawn to the same places…and each other?
Valerie Comer says
I could live without the BITES. No-see-ums are so very tiny, about 1/8″ long, and their bite barely feels like the brush of a feather. But I needed three nights of antihistamines to break the frantic fiery itch and get some sleep! And the red bumps are still on my skin three weeks later! Give me a mosquito any day. (But don’t tell them…)
Valerie Comer says
Ha, sounds like your tale to tell! LOL
We don’t camp in places where the view is only of someone else’s RV. Well, we have a couple of times, but those are more like “hotel rooms” when we’re traveling from A to B and aren’t hanging around!
Paula Shreckhise says
That looks like a lovely, peaceful place too recharge!
Valerie Comer says
It was! Or would have been, minus a “few” bugs!
Alicia Haney says
Wow,it looks like you went to a Beautiful place ! I had never heard of No see ums, when I read where you wrote about them, I thought that they were maybe mosquitos, then I read what you wrote on a comment that you would have rather it had been mosquitos. I love to stay in cabins in the forests ,but I definitely do not like the bugs, they are always bugging me. Thank you for sharing about the beautiful place you visited. My husband and I are over due for a stay in a cabin, God willing we will get to do that again after things get much better. Have a Great week and stay safe.
Valerie Comer says
Thanks, Alicia! Bugs are probably the thing that keep most folks out of wild places. We go anyway, but sometimes have severe regrets! I don’t remember reacting this badly other years, so I wasn’t that bothered by the first onslaught of them. It wasn’t until a few days later that the itch became crazy bad!
Here’s a bit about them: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/no-see-um-insect-bite-edmonton-1.4681546
Patty says
Beautiful! My parents are retired and have a travel trailer. One of these days my husband and I are going to have to borrow it for a few days=)
Valerie Comer says
Patty, we went from tenting to a truck camper in about 1998 and from the truck camper to our first travel trailer in 2011. We LOVE it! We love that it can be mostly set up all the time. We decide we want to go camping? Toss in clean clothes and some food. Takes hubby ten minutes tops to hook up to the truck and we’re off! Tent camping takes a lot more planning, and loading the camper on the back of the truck was always a total pain.
denise says
That photo brings back memories of camping in a travel trailer when I was a kid.
Valerie Comer says
My kids don’t have that memory, LOL! And my grandgirls will mostly remember tents with their parents (who think we are wusses…) ;)
Trixi says
Such a lovely camping spot Valerie! Looks so peaceful & serene. I’m glad you and Jim are getting the time to relax and spend time together creating special treasured memories :-)
Happy camping!!
Valerie Comer says
Thank you! Yes, we need “us” time away from the honey-do list at home!
