I know I’ve mentioned before that I spent the first eleven years of my life in Northern New Mexico. Even though I don’t live there anymore – and haven’t for 35 years (and wow, that seems like a big number, but I checked the math twice and it pans out. *cough* ) – it will always be the place I consider the home of my heart.
So since I don’t have as many fun vacation pictures like Valerie, I thought I’d share a few of the mementos of New Mexico that have been a part of our family decorations (mom’s house and mine) for years.

Those dolls are super cool! :D

I know how you feel..it has been 37 years since I moved to Florida, but NJ is still home for me too!!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I’ve always thought so! I was trying to dig up what I remember as the fable that went with then but I couldn’t find it online. So I don’t know if it was just something my mom told me or if it was something else.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Aww. The brain is so interesting, isn’t it?
Trudy says
The dolls are so cute!! Kinda reminds me of the nesting dolls, though different! I’m a native Floridian, never lived anywhere else, but most of my extended family lives in NW GA, so I consider that home, too!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
They are a little like nesting dolls. My mom has quite a collection of them as well. Maybe I’ll take some pictures of them next time I see dad to share here.
Trudy says
That’d be great!! They’re so different and unique!
Jaycee Weaver says
Woohoo for New Mexico! 😄 I spent three first 14 years of my life in Henderson, NV (just outside Vegas), but New Mexico is what I’ll always consider the home of my heart no matter where the Lord may send us someday.
Always nice to see other people talking about the state that is oft forgotten. 😆
Jaycee Weaver says
*the, not three. I should know to proofread before posting. Sigh.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I always get a kick out of the stories in New Mexico Magazine from people encountering issues because others don’t know that NM is in the USA.
My grandfather (they lived in CA) had a friend who always would ask if we knew English when we came to visit. 🙄
Hubby went to high school in Vegas, so I know Henderson!
Dianne says
Amazing dolls.
It’s been about 35 years and now when I go home to visit I receive comments about how dreadful my accent is, but I still feel that feeling of spaciousness because you can see the sky there, whereas here it is obscured by so many hills and skyscrapers, lol!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yes! The color and expanse of sky is like no other.
Lila Diller says
Love the little dolls!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Thanks!

The storyteller dolls are fun! Do you know the history or folklore behind them? I’m always curious about things like that. :-)
Today is my birthday, and I can’t even believe I’ve been on this earth for 50 years! It just seems like yesterday I was getting married & raising my two kids. I also live on the Oregon coast but was raised in Illinois….it’s been 36 years since I’ve lived there. WOW! I guess you really don’t know how time flies when you’re having fun! Most of my family members still live there with a few scattered here & there. Same as you, Elizabeth, it will always be a place called home.
Congrats to this weeks winners & to all the authors who contributed to the blog this past week! It’s been so fun to read each post and comment.
Happy SONday everyone, have a very blessed day!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Happy birthday!
I did a little more poking around and it looks like the original artist made the storyteller as an homage to her grandfather who was one of the tribal elders and historians.

Cute picture of NM, I also love the dolls. I was born in Texas and I was raised in New Mexico. I have been living in Texas for the past 46 yrs. One of my brothers still lives in the house we were raised, he has done a lot of changes to the house., and there are a lot more houses and people from when we were brought up in the little town. When our dad built our house in NM our house was about the 2nd house to be built there, now the little town has a lot of people, it is so different. I loved growing up in NM. New Mexico will always have a very Special place in my heart!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Where in NM were you?
How fun to have a family home still in the family!
Penelope says
Such a lovely photo of the west. We’ve been in MN forever and are just considering leaving the state since soon our jobs will no longer dictate where we live. It’s a weird feeling. I imagine we will miss home terribly but the open skies of the west and the peace away from the cities are calling. Our adult sons say, “Have fun!” Lol. So different than what we hear from sibs with daughters. What we actually do – Time will tell. :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Fun!
Yes, boys are so different! I look at my hubby and his relationship with his parents and I’m bracing myself.
Penelope says
Elizabeth,
Ha! Exactly! One of our adult sons moved into a house 1/2 mile from us. He has lived there 2 yrs. I have yet to see the entire house. He wants his space & I absolutely respect that.
Indeed! Most boys are different (more independent) than girls/daughters. (My parents are long gone. I remind my husband to touch bases with his own mom frequently). She prefers to hear from him. :D

We’ve both grown up on the east coast but have really enjoyed our several visits to NM. I wish we had been in Albuquerque for the Balloon festival.
I have now lived in our bustling suburb of DC for more years than all the years in other places combined, but I still think of my family in rural upstate NY, where I grew up, as part of “home”.
denise says
Cool dolls.
Congratulations to the winners!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
We used to go to the balloons every year. Such a fun time!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Thank you :)
Sonia Minkel says
The story telling dolls are really interesting. Is there a history behind them?
