It’s the end of September!
This is my last Sunday edition for a while. Valerie will be taking over as we shift into October. I’ve enjoyed spending the last two months with y’all on Sundays!
My boys (hubby and two sons) are out camping this weekend with their Trail Life troop. They always look forward to this weekend where they get to do fun things like shoot rifles, hike, tie knots, and all those sorts of manly activities.
I’m always grateful when they’re like “Mom, you don’t have to come if you don’t want to.” I love spending time with the family out in nature. But tents are not really my jam.
Are you a happy tent camper?

In my younger days I loved being a Royal Ranger leader in Oz. Camping with troops of children was always wonderfully challenging. Also noisy, messy, and often wet.
Some really deep conversations regarding the Lord, family & school issues often popped up during KP duties.
Now my body prefers a bed. Conversations though are still welcome.
Renate says
Welcome Elizabeth! Enjoy your Sunday. Never enjoyed camping, especially not in a tent. Did my share of camping as a teen and again when our kids were young. My father in law had a motor home and we enjoyed that for several years. Prefer hotels. Enjoy the cooler days of fall. Best wishes.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yes! Hubby and I camped a ton when we were younger. But beds…beds are the best now.
Conversation with kids is always wonderful. Sounds like you were a fantastic leader.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
We are taking about renting an RV and giving that a try at some point. I feel like I’d probably enjoy that (I know I’d like it more than a tent!)
Happy fall!
Dianne says
My days of the cold hard ground for camping are over, I prefer glamping or 5 star now :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yup. :)
Lila Diller says
I used to love camping in the tent with my family growing up. When my parents bought a small camper, I thought we were so spoiled! I had the hammock bed above my parents, as my younger sister was afraid of heights. The poor quality sleep didn’t affect me then like it does now. I can’t sleep in a tent anymore, period. I have a hard time sleeping in any bed–nice hotel or otherwise–that’s not my own. And the different sounds and temperatures? I can’t handle it anymore. I’m getting old! :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
There really is no sleep like the sleep in my own bed!
Margaret Nelson says
My parents took me camping in Yosemite National Park when I was about 2 months old, and they didn’t even have a tent yet! They told me stories of people walking past their sleeping bag making comments about “that poor little baby” :-) I don’t mind a tent as long as there’s enough room to roll off the airbed and get myself up before hitting the side of the tent :-) We do have a pop-up trailer that’s even more comfortable. But I’m always happy to get home to my bed :-)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh goodness, your parents were adventurous! We used to camp with friends and they brought their then 3-4 month old along. But we did have a tent :)
Valerie Comer says
We tent-camped for many years, but we went to a truck camper and then to a travel trailer eventually. We’d been going less often since I had a fulltime job – it was just so much work. We love the RV because you can leave it mostly set up and ready to go, so we could go more often again! All you need to do is shift food from your fridge/kitchen and clean clothes and away you go.
Now, I would say we love the travel trailer for the following reasons:
1. The fridge. We still cook mostly over a campstove or the campfire, but not messing with a cooler and ice makes a huge difference in what we can fix for meals. (Also, hubby does the cooking when we’re camping, huge win for me!)
2. The bed. When we were younger, we could handle the hard ground no problem, but not so much as we’ve gotten older. A good night’s sleep is vital to enjoying the rest of the experience!
3. The bathroom. Yup, that’s only #3. Most campgrounds have passable facilities, but the RV enables us to park by a random creek or lake without a campground and manage just fine.
4. A place to retreat in inclement weather. Getting cold and wet in a small tent with no way to dry out easily is not much fun, so if the weather looked iffy, we’d just stay home. Now we laugh at the weather. Our grandgirls were glued to the windows this summer watching hail bounce off the picnic table and the wind bend the bushes. No worries. We were warm, dry, and safe.
You all KNOW how much I love getting out in nature! There is absolutely nothing like sipping that first morning coffee beside a fog-shrouded lake listening to the loons to bring peace to my soul.
And you all ALSO know you’re going to get a bunch of my summer camping pictures in October and November Sunday Editions, right?!?! See you next week…
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Ha. I do love the nature aspect. And the things you list are part of why we think we’d like to rent an RV and give that a shot. We’d probably end up looking at trailers vs an RV were we to buy, but it’s not as easy to rent a trailer to try out (at least not that I’ve found).
And for me, I guess I’m a snob, but I don’t find the facilities at most campgrounds passable. The bathroom probably hits #2 on my list (after #1 a better night’s sleep) :)

Some of my most treasured memories come from camping, but none of them have to do with being comfortable (unless you count sleeping in freezing weather and still being warm). Pretty much all those memories are “in spite of” something. Like surviving a thunderstorm up in the mountains of southern France when I was a teenager (and learning the French word for “thunderstorm”. BONUS!). I can understand Valerie Comer’s appreciation of a fog shrouded lake, though. Or overlooking a sunset from the rim of the Grand Canyon. Or seeing a canopy of fall colors over a country lane in New Hampshire. Or enjoying a quiet morning on a dock overlooking Mobile bay near the Alabama Gulf Coast. Hmm. Sounds like God’s nature has a few things worth working for. But I must confess that the Grand Canyon involved a hotel stay and Mobile bay was from a B&B visit. Hmm. Sounds like there may be some middle ground. :)
Trudy says
I have never been camping, in any form! My idea of roughing it is a bad hotel!
Trixi says
I was a girl scout as a young girl & remember going on camping trips. Though we slept in cabins instead of tents, I loved all things outdoorsy! My family was huge on camping so I have also slept in a tent, sleeping bag and all. I love cooking hot dogs over a fire and enjoying nature, fishing, taking a walk in the woods, and etc. I haven’t been camping for a very long time, so my idea now is a travel trailer or something along that line because I certainly can’t see myself sleeping on the hard ground (or even on an air mattress) in a tent! My body would protest the next morning…lol! But I would still enjoy doing all things outdoors, being close to God’s creation always brings me such peace.
Happy SONday Inspy Romance! It was great to “hang out” with you Elizabeth, thanks for sharing all your pictures and telling us about your family. I enjoy getting to know an authors “normal” life….you know, outside of writing, lol!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Hotels and B&B’s are good for sure. But the thunderstorm sounds semi fun. Also scary. :)
Valerie Comer says
To be fair, in the last ten years, we’ve also done two road trips down the Oregon/northern California coast, staying in hotels every night. And we’ve rented a cottage by the ocean for a few days at least three times. And did the tent thing ONCE in that time period LOL.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I think I might prefer a tent to a bad hotel 😉
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I always love learning more about people’s real life as well :)
Valerie Comer says
Motorhomes have their place for sure. We prefer the trailer because we already have a truck, and we almost always disconnect the trailer and have a vehicle we can drive to a trailhead or into town for groceries or whatever, without having to take the entire rig. It’s perfect for us. :)
Trudy says
I’ve actually never stayed in a bad one, but I’ve heard stories! My sisters and I took Mom on some birthday trips starting when she turned 80, and stayed in B & B’s. Some of them were really great, and some weren’t. All were experiences, and we had fun for the most part.
Alicia Haney says
Thank you for spending 2 months with us, I enjoyed it. Congratulations to the winners! I do fine in a tent for maybe 2 days at the most, but my kind of camping is in a cabin. :) Have a Great week and a relaxing time. Stay safe. God Bless you and your family. Thank you so Very Much.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I don’t mind cabin camping at all! I have some good memories of that from growing up.

Our family joke was that “roughing it” for my MIL was black and white TV at the hotel.

I’d rather be a glamper with all of the amenities!
Congratulations to the winners!
Thank you for my win.

Hi! My hubby & I have camped since our honeymoon – in tents, in the back of a pick-up, inside our compact car like the homeless (honeymoon), in the snow, in 100+F heat, and while both bear and coons ran wild outside our tent. We still camp outside in a tent once a year during the annual Osh Kosh Airshow in WI under the wing of our airplane for a few nights (cancelled this year). We both absolutely love the outdoors. I will admit to preferring Clean housing vacationing these days, but I would Always chose our tent or car over a dirty, loud, smelly, bug-infested room any day (which we experienced during our honeymoon – thus the car camping episodes while we passed thru certain urban areas). Lol. We’ve shared many crazy experiences over the years w quite the stories. ;)
Penelope says
PS. My hubby was a Boy Scout & still lives the Scout Creed, believes it, & can quote it. He says Scouts showed him how to be a man and to survive in the wild.
Trudy says
That would be true!! Lol!! My family always went to visit family when my sisters and I were growing up! We never stayed in a hotel on trips, or camped! With 2 adults and 4 girls, it would have been a tad much!
Amy Perrault says
I camped since I was a baby & still do at the same campsite down the highway. I met my husband there when I was 8-9 years old. We were best friends right away & we both brought up our best friends from home & lived 5 minutes away from each other. I’ve camped in a camper. We had a shed made into a bedroom for more then 3 people & we always hung out in there. We also slept outside on a swing or in tents or a deck. When our daughter was born she started camping right away & loved camping in a tent.
Sylvain Perrault says
My family loves to camp from a tent to a trailer. I met my wife when we were kids & we camped together in tents as kids till we became adults. We have our daughter & puppy & they love it also.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Aw. Then I hope you get to!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Glamping does look fun.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I love this. And camping is definitely better than a gross hotel. Hands down.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh my goodness. There’s a story in there.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
How delightful!
Sandra says
