Happy Sunday! Last week I spent a few days at the coast. I appreciated the summer sunshine and sea breeze. I love seafood, especially when it’s caught fresh. When I was growing up, my parents would line up on a Friday night at our local fish and chips takeaway shop to buy dinner. On Friday I took a trip down memory lane and indulged in the great Aussie tradition of fish and chips by the water.

Dianne says
Absolutely nothing better than fresh seafood from the boat, prepared simply and elegantly. One of the perks of living near the ocean. Were you a fishcake kid, pineapple fritter or one who loved those chiko rolls, lol, with your fush’n’chips?
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Dianne, Potato scallops and calamari rings were my top picks. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Mary Preston says
Fish and chips at the beach. Still a favourite.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Mary, The seagulls clean up the leftovers, lol. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Ausjenny says
We often had fish and Chips for lunch on a Sunday after church as we had limited time for lunch and it was an easy lunch. Even later I would often get chips and mum a Hawaiian burger. We live an hour from the beach so didn’t get there a lot (a country hour not a city hour.)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Jenny, I love the Aussie burgers with the lot that include bacon, egg, beetroot and pineapple. Fish and chips is a fast and easy takeaway. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Ellie says
Your summer picture of ice cream and your picture of the coast are both refreshing. We’ve had a cold and snowy winter in my neck of the woods.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Ellie, I love seeing summery photos during our mid-year winter season. Thanks for commenting. 😊

Lori R says
I love fish and chips. It reminds me of my trip to England a long time ago.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Lori, Our Aussie fish and chips by the seaside tradition definitely has British roots. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Trudy says
I also like fish and chips, Florida style! Lol!! As long as the fish isn’t too fishy, anyway!!
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Trudy, I’m not sure what Florida style fish and chips tastes like, but I’m sure it’s good! Thanks for commenting. 😊
Lincoln says
Don’t think I’ve ever had a proper fish ‘n’ chips, but it always sounded yummy!

Paula Marie says
I love memories like that!
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Paula, It’s fun to remember the good old days. I live inland (90 minute drive to the nearest beach on the NSW south coast) and it’s always a treat to visit the beach. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Kim says
I love the coast. Just sitting and watching the waves, listening to the birds soothes my frayed edges.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Kim, The coast is relaxing and peaceful, especially when it’s not peak tourist season. There’s lots of birdlife to watch and dolphin/whale watching tours at different times of the year. Thanks for commenting. 😊

It was always a treat in our home, at least for me, when dad would bring home fresh fish Nd shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico. Our daughter learned the same taste explosion this past spring. She’s ruined for frozen seafood now.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Vicci, I love fresh prawns (which is what we call shrimp) and I agree, frozen seafood just isn’t the same. Thanks for commenting. 😊

Trixi says
One of our favorite places to go is on the waterfront in Seattle WA to eat at Ivar’s. It’s a restaurant that serves fresh fish & chips (salmon, cod, halibut), their homemade clam chowder and other fresh seafood. We haven’t been there for a few years, so it’s always a treat when we can make it there. It’s also nice that they have outdoor seating to enjoy on a sunny day and watch the water over the Puget Sound.
Of course, we have places here where I live on the Oregon coast that you can buy fresh caught fish & seafood right off the fishing boats. We did that one year & bought a fresh tuna fillet so my husband could grill it. YUMMYY!! It was the best thing ever. We also have restaurants you can have fish & chips, chowder and other seafood. Living on the coast is a great place for that kind of food!
Happy Sunday everyone!
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Trixi, yes, I’ve enjoyed eating delicious fish & chips at a restaurant on the Oregon Coast. And, I also discovered clam chowder – which isn’t easy to find in Australia. I love Atlantic salmon and it’s one of my top picks to order if it’s on the restaurant menu. Ivan’s in Seattle sounds like my kind of restaurant! Thanks for commenting. 😊
Patty says
It’s always fun to go to the beach/shore! I’m not a huge seafood fan, but when we head down to the beach I will sometimes get fresh seafood.
Narelle Atkins says

Fresh fish right out of the water and pan fried is delicious! One time when we went camping for a day, my husband fished and he caught some fish and they were the best, he cleaned them and then he pan cooked them not too long after he caught them and they were delicious! Have a Great week and stay safe. God Bless you and your family.

Lila J Diller says
I’ve always loved seafood, too. When I was young, my parents would take us up into the mountains of Idaho, and my dad would catch us some fresh rainbow trout! Yum!
Then when I moved to NC with my husband, we were finally able to go to a beach house on the coast with some friends and have fresh scallops, shrimp, and crab legs!! Double yum!
It kind of spoiled me — all frozen (the only kind we can get in the western side of the state) is not nearly the same quality. But I will take shrimp any way I can get it. ;)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Lila, Rainbow trout is delicious and fresh scallops, crab legs, shrimp – they are favorites of mine, too. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Deb Galloway says
You almost made me feel warm for a minute there, thanks! I’ve always loved fresh fish! Nothing quite like it. I loved going to my grandparent’s cabin as a kid, from the fishing, cleaning, cooking and eating it. I was so excited when I was old enough to have a hand in every step.
Narelle Atkins says

Renate says
Hi Narelle! Happy Monday! Enjoyed reading the comments about Fish and Chips. In Michigan we have Fish Fry Fridays. Due to the pandemic miss going to our favorite brewery for fish and fries. I have eaten fresh fish my husband caught in small inland lakes and cleaned and prepared. I have eaten Fish in Germany, Switzerland, Japan and at the London airport. Mmm. So many kinds. So many ways to prepare fish. Enjoy your week.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Renate, Your Fish Fry Fridays sound fun. Interestingly, we call fries ‘chips’ unless we’re at places like Maccas (McDonalds) who use the American terminology. I like salmon and tuna in sushi and I agree, there are so many different and delicious ways to prepare fish. Thanks for commenting. 😊
