Can you believe we’re already half way through the month of May? They say time disappears faster as we get older, and 2021 is certainly powering along! In Australia, the end of autumn is near and the pretty leaves are falling and falling and falling. Our yard is collecting maple leaves, and we now have more sunshine filtering through the bare tree branches. The shorter days, morning frosts, and cooler weather makes it harder to dry laundry on the clothes line. Our typically low humidity and low rainfall Canberra climate means we can usually dry laundry outdoors all year round. Do you dry laundry outdoors or use indoor lines or a drying machine?

HI Narelle. the weather has certainly turned. I dry the laundry on the clothes line. I have fretwork I think its call on the back shaded area outside the back door. Not quite a veranda a bit like a pergola. I put the things on coat hangers and hang there so it doesn’t get wet but still gets the breeze. I have a clothes horse I will use for the smaller items. I also will finish drying things in front of the fire. We use to have an open fire and it was much better to dry clothes the ones with a door are so much safer but not as good for drying clothes.
Congrats all winners
Milla Holt says
Tumble dryer 95% of the time. I know, shame on me. It’s just so much more of a time-saver with a large family. In the summer I hang the washing outside more often.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Always the dryer. Our neighborhood actually outlawed clothes lines, which is ridiculous but there it is. I do sometimes lay things out on the deck but not super often.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Jenny, The mornings have been so cold this weekend and, with 11C max temps, I haven’t bothered trying to dry laundry outdoors. My indoor clothes horses are full and I put a couple of loads in the tumble dryer. An indoor fire would be handy. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Milla, It’s definitely more time consuming to use the outdoor line. I try to delegate the job to my young adult children. Our cat is the most interested family member in the washing machine cycles because she can take advantage of the outdoor time with us, lol. :)
Lincoln says
Our neighborhood is the same as Elizabeth’s: no clothes lines. Where I grew up, though, we had only outdoors lines and, occasionally, lines on a closed-in porch. My wife’s mom had both outdoors lines and a tumble dryer. She actually loved doing laundry.
We did use the fireplace as well but that was usually for snow boots and winter gloves.
Congratulations to our fine crop of winners! Have a great week!
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Beth, Wow… that’s something I haven’t heard of before. The good old Hills Hoist outdoor clothes line in the backyard is an iconic Aussie thing. It also made a great merry-go-round style of swing when I was a kid, much to my parents’ frustration. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Lincoln, I’m surprised by the neighbourhood rules on clothes lines. I have outdoor lines that are under cover, which means the clothes don’t ‘frost-dry’ if I leave them out overnight and do the twenty-four hour midday to midday rotation. I live in hope that one of my kids will decide they love doing laundry. 😊
Trudy says
I always use the dryer, except for things that can’t go in the dryer. I’d use a clothesline, I grew up using one; however, the pollen would have made me re-wash and dry!! Starting the end of this month first of next, we start our rainy season, so I’d have to make a dash outside to get it in, which I used to do ! Now, it’s just easier to use to the dryer. I was thinking the other day I’d like to be able to hang my sheets out, though. I don’t have an HOA where I live, so I could have a clothesline if I really wanted one. I’d just have to watch out for the fickle Florida weather!
Valerie Comer says
I especially love line-dried sheets! But other than that, I mostly use my dryer. Cat hair comes off in the dryer, but not on the clothesline.
Lincoln says
I think the HOA (Home Owners Association) has the misguided idea that, since indoor appliances are “upscale”, outdoor clothes lines represent a degradation of the standard of living and therefore of the property values, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah. We are in a suburban area so I suspect that the situation may be unique to that milieu. Oh well, soldier on.
Lila Diller says
I only use my dryer. A few years ago, our dryer broke, and we didn’t have the money to fix it. So I used indoor lines strung throughout my main rooms. It worked, but it was terribly inconvenient. Here we get a lot of rain, so outdoor lines just don’t work most of the time. Now that my dryer is fixed, I love it!
Paula Shreckhise says
We mostly use the dryer. We bought a house in September and it came with an upscale efficient washer and dryer. We dry some things on our screen porch/ sunroom.
Trixi says
I’ve always had a dryer for clothes. But I remember my mom rented a house that didn’t have a washer or dryer, so she had hung up several clothes lines in summer time to dry the clothes, sheets & towels. I LOVE the smell of freshly laundered sheets that dry on a line, nothing like it in the world!
Where I live now, we can’t have clotheslines according to the manufactured park rules. Or I would love to hang my sheets & towels outside! :-)
Congrats to this weeks winners! Happy Sunday to all our IR people!
Debra J Pruss says
Congratulations to the winners. I dry clothes in the dryer as well as hang some to dry inside.
Mary Preston says
I have just this minute put the clothes on the line outside. The autumn morning sun is warming up beautifully.
I hang clothes outside all year round too.
Narelle Atkins says
That’s interesting. We have apartment complexes with rules about laundry being dried on balconies etc. In recent times green/environmental concerns have been more prominent. It hasn’t affected property values or housing prices here – they are rising everywhere atm.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Trudy, I also suffer from hay fever and I dry my clothes indoors on the clothes airers during spring when the wattle is in bloom. I’ll also use my tumble dryer for bed linen to reduce the pollen exposure. I have an undercover line outdoors and I pay attention to the native birds. The magpies, in particular, become quite vocal when rain and storms are coming, lol. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Valerie, yes, the scent and feel of line-dried sheets is so good. The dryer is an easy fix for cat hair. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Lila, My tumble dryer is 25 years old, and most likely still going because I don’t use it often. Drying everything indoors all the time would be challenging. I’m glad your dryer is fixed. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Paula, I’ve seen the machines that both wash and dry, which would be so convenient. I use my indoor airers beside windows that get the morning sun. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Trixi, yes, the scent from line-dried linen is lovely. Although, a warm towel straight from the dryer is also nice. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Debra, It’s good to have both options. There are some fabrics that I’d never put in the dryer. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Mary, My next job this morning is to do laundry, lol. It’s sunny here today and hopefully warm enough to dry everything by 2pm before the afternoon chill starts to set in. Enjoy your warm autumn day. 😊
denise says
No clothesline allowed, but I do have drying racks in my basement for a lot for things and a dryer for the rest.
Congratulations to the winners.
Dianne says
No outside lines here to use. Nothing like the crispness of freshly dried cotton on the line. Spring is always inside drying on clothes horses (though not in view of outside due to strata). I do love my eco cotton towels though they need a tumble dry every few months to keep them soft naturally. Have a great week everyone :)
Natalya Lakhno says
Congratulations to the winners!
I use a dryer mostly, except for some delicates.
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Dianne, I haven’t tried using eco cotton towels. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Natalya, The dryer is convenient, for sure. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Denise, We don’t have a basement, but it would definitely come in handy for drying laundry indoors. Thanks for commenting. :)
