Do you consider June part of spring or summer?
This is an ongoing debate in our house. To me, June is summer. June, July, and August are the three summer months.
Hubby is a solstice/equinox guy. So summer doesn’t “officially” begin until the 21st or 22nd of June. (He’s like that with winter, too, how it doesn’t begin until the 22nd and …just no.)
Honestly, as soon as we start hitting 90 degree days more often than not, I feel like we should be able to call it summer.
What say you?

June is winter here, so good luck with your seasonal debate.
Ausjenny says
As Mary said June is winter here. We go by calendar months. June, July, August are winter. But in school we had an older teacher who said the seasons don’t really start till the winter and Summer solstice and the equinox. Always said Summer officially starts around Dec 21.
So where you are I was always taught it was June 20ish. So I would side with him.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Well yes, but the question is still legitimate. Does winter begin June 1 or the 21/22nd when the equinox happens and it’s “technically” a new season? (Or even mid-May if it’s getting into winter temps then consistently?)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Thanks for understanding the intent of the question rather than getting hung up on a specific season name.
Ausjenny says
my fingers are tired the last line was I was always told the American seasons start with the solstice and equinox. Mr Moody was my grade 5 teacher and my favourite Its one of the things I always remember him saying (although he said the date) but I it wasn’t till I was much older I understood what he meant. (I like going by calendar).
Renate says
Hi Elizabeth! As a Northerner and teacher, summer started when my sons and now the grandkids have summer vacation from school – which begins around June 10. In Michigan school vacation is June, July, and August. Guess that is why moms in America say summer starts beginning of June. In other countries this is different. In Germany students only six week summer break (July and August). Hubby celebrates the summer equinox, because it is the longest day. He also notes that now that now daylight will be shorter each day until winter solstice on December 21, which is the shortest day and longest night. We celebrate Spring Solstice March 21, which is our oldest son’s birthday and in our farming community gives us hope for renewal of life.
Having just returned from your neck of the woods – Williamsburg, Virginia last week with its 90 (32 Celsius) degree temperature and humidity, I say it was summer (not spring). Cooler in Michigan this morning. Only 70. Enjoy your summer.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Sounds like my hubby would get along with yours :)
Hope you had a great time at Williamsburg!
Trudy says
June is definitely summer!! Florida doesn’t do Spring, though, so we have summer most of the year!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
This is true!
Valerie Comer says
I was quite annoyed when I discovered that seasons were technically marked by solstices and equinoxes. Because, hello, we in the North all KNOW that winter is December – February, spring is March – May, summer is June – August, and fall is September – November. I mean, that’s our snow season, our melting and flower season, our hot season, and our falling leaves season. Seemed obvious to me growing up in Canada with our very distinct seasons!
Judy says
As soon as it’s consistently over 100 degrees, it’s summer. This year, it’s been summer since May. This week, we’re looking at 115 and 116: Summer. :)
Kimberly Rose Johnson says
I’ve always based the seasons on the school year. For most of my life it has revolved around that first as a student then a piano teacher, then a mom still teaching piano and later an AVID tutor at a high school.
Even though summer doesn’t officially start until Summer Solstice, I’m sticking with June 1 being the unofficial start to summer. :)
Jcp says
I would agree with you. Of course where I live in the US one week it was 48 one day and 88 two days later.
I loved So You Want a Second Chance? Highly recommended even if you don’t like billionaire romances…
Nancy says
Our local TV meteorologists (we are in a small market in the mountains of southern WV) always mention the meteorological seasons. June, July and August are meteorological summer. I just googled and it states that meteorological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle. I always assumed it was for statistical reasons but there is more to it than that. The way our weather runs here in the mountains meteorological seasons make more sense to us.
Lincoln says
Okay, please pardon my geek. It turns out that the two camps both have grounds for being right, just for different reasons. The “June 1 is summer” folks are using the definition for what is called meteorological summer. It’s based on the annual temperature cycles observed by the people who study the weather. Hence the “It’s hot. It’s summer” analysis.
The solstice and equinox crowd are using the very precise definition of where the earth is in it’s trip around the sun which controls the amount of sunlight seen during our days (length of day above and below the earth’s equator being opposite). These are the “Summer starts on June 20/21” people. This definition is called astronomical summer.
Both are scientifically sound. One is a little more fuzzy (meteo-) but corresponds to common observation (temperature). The other (astro-) is more precise but less tied to the growing and harvesting cycle on earth.

Turning geek off now.
Congratulations to our winners! Have a great and God-centered week.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Right?? Equinox blah blah ;)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh man. That’s hot. And definitely summer.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yay! And yes, the school year definitely factors into my feelings some, although I grew up getting out in early May and going back early-August.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting me know – that always makes my day.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Ooh. I’m going to have to research meteorological seasons now.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I love Geek information sharing – thank you! Now I don’t have to go googling for myself :)
Jessica B. says
I say that June-August are summer. It seems so wrong though that the days start getting shorter during two of the summer months.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
It’s true! They shouldn’t start getting shorter until fall :)
Lelia (Lucy) Reynolds says
Technically it is spring but it’s hot and humid like summer. 😜
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I guess technicalities work.
Patty says
Here in the south, June is definitely considered summer!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yes!
Trixi says
I’m the same as you, I consider June, July & August summer months. And technically your husband is right in saying it’s not officially summer until June 21st, just like with all the other seasons.
Though here on the Oregon coast where I live, we don’t even really start getting the really warm summer weather until maybe July….then usually an Indian summer in September when we can hit really hot temperatures some years. At least for our area anyway! I know when I grew up in Illinois, our summer warm weather started in May, along with the humidity. :-) I love the milder temperatures here though and don’t like it when it gets above mid 70’s.
Congrats to this weeks winners! It’s going to be another terrific week on IR, happy Sunday everyone!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
We always get a little Indian Summer as well — though usually in early October (usually when we have a camping trip scheduled, lol)
Alicia Haney says
I guess, I go by what the calendar says when the seasons start and end, I know so far we have been having some very hot days here in west Texas, the hottest it has gotten is 109 and we aren’t even in the middle of June. Have a great week and stay safe.
Debra J Pruss says
Congratulations to the winners. I usually think of summer beginning with Memorial Day. God bless you.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yikes, so hot. I imagine maybe you’re used it it because you get it every year, but still.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I think Memorial Day is often what we see as the start of summer in the US (I’m with you!)
Ellie says
I consider June part of summer.
denise says
Congratulations, winners.
June straddles both seasons. But when you think back to our youth, summer vacation is “summer,” and that is June, July, and August. I realize parts of the South have May, June, and July for Summer break.
Amy Perrault says
I consider June summer even May at times is summer here.
Sylvain Perrault says
I think Summer is June for sure.
Paula Marie says
I am in Florida, summer is pretty much March through most of November. Winter is a week in January.
Lila Diller says
I’m with you – the temperature is the deciding factor. Since it usually starts warming up for us in May, summer starts around Memorial Day. June, July, & August are the summer months.
Natalya Lakhno says
Summer starts June 1 :)
