Take a good close look at that image above! Do you see anything unusual? We’re just driving westward on our way to British Columbia’s Pacific coast in September when hubby hits the brakes. “Did you see that?” Uh… no. No, I did not. He did a u-ey on the highway and drove back. And this is what I saw at pretty much eye-level… (see next photo)

Lovely photos. I love Canada (or what I’ve seen of it). And that is one cute bear … as long as he stays that far away 😜
Mary Preston says
I’d be turning around for a look too.
Trudy says
All of your pics has me wanting to go to BC!! It’s now on my bucket list! I’d definitely be turning around for a look! I went to have my hair cut this past week, and my hairdresser told me that they have a bobcat that likes to hang out in the back of the building. She’s been in the “new” place for about three months. She said they’re cautious when they open the back door now!
Paula Marie says
What a precious find! I wonder where momma bear was though???
Renate says
Hi Valerie! Thanks for sharing your road trip and the wild life you encounter. In SW Michigan with Hickory Creek and ravines, near the shores of Lake Michigan we see deer and wild turkeys. On road trips north we always look for our turkey friends, except due to Covid I think they moved. Last year I saw them near the library. Last week they wanted a new beach house and 10 wild turkeys moved to Lake Michigan, maybe they want bakery handouts. Took a different route to school with my 2. grade granddaughter. We were thrilled as they crossed the street from the lake. So fun to make up stories. I said they were on the move, because they didn’t want to become Thanksgiving dinner. Blessings this Sunday. Looking forward to your travel log. Hope to make it your way, since our youngest son moved to Idaho.
Valerie Comer says
As you can tell from the first photo, I had to zoom in a long way to get a closeup!
Valerie Comer says
We do that regularly when one of us sees “something” off the side of the road!
Paula Shreckhise says
Loved the pictures. Have a great relaxing time!
Thanks for choosing me to win Teresa!
Valerie Comer says
I’d be cautious of a bobcat, too! A few years ago (like 13 LOL) we saw a lynx beside the highway not that far from where the bear was on this trip, but lynx and bobcats aren’t something we see often. Hubby did a u-ey for that one, too!
Valerie Comer says
Jim figured this was a yearling, not a young cub.
Valerie Comer says
Both deer and wild turkeys are so common here that they don’t merit a mention most of the time! They’re just part of the landscape.
I’d sure love to meet you someday when you’re in the West! The border will be open again someday.
Valerie Comer says
We did have a great time, and have been home for a couple of weeks now. Back to whatever passes for normal life around here :)
Brenda Day says
Love the photos thanks for sharing
Valerie Comer says
I’m glad you enjoyed them!
Lincoln says
I remember years ago coming across a song sung by Andy Griffith about a preacher who went hunting on a Sunday despite knowing that the Lord might not be pleased. He wound up being chased up a tree by a bear. The chorus of the song was his prayer in that situation:
Lord, didn’t you deliver Daniel from the lion’s den?
Also deliver Jonah from the belly of the whale and then
The three Hebrew children from the fiery furnace so the Good Book do declare
So Lord if you ain’t gonna help me, Dear Lord don’t You help that bear!
Happy Sunday, all, and congratulations to our winner, Paula! And so looking forward to a guest post from Ginger Solomon!
Valerie Comer says
Fun song! LOL. Yes, it will be good to get a glimpse of what’s going on for Ginger. I think we’ve all missed her around here.
Anke says
Did NOT see the bear!
Valerie Comer says
Hubby has good eyes! To be fair, I am the one who spots something “out of the ordinary” probably 20% of the time, but it’s usually him. I spotted a moose last spring that he hadn’t seen, and we backed up and watched her for several minutes. :)
Jessica B. says
That was a gorgeous view from the deck of your rental house. Thanks for the gift card IR authors!
Patty says
We live in a town of about 20,000 people, there has been a lot of homebuilding going on lately and a rash of black bear sightings. I think they are being pushed out of their habitat sadly.
Valerie Comer says
Here in the PNW, there are more bears in populated areas because we had such a bad drought and fire year. However, where I live, they are never UNcommon!
denise says
Congratulations to the winner.
Lovely photos, as always.
Valerie Comer says
Thank you!
Trixi says
I’d be absolutely terrified if I saw a bear for real! I sure do enjoy your pictures and sharing your trips with us. It’s like traveling to places I’ve never been before. Your pictures bring them to life for me.
Congrats to this weeks winners! Happy Sunday IR
Lelia (Lucy) Reynolds says
What a great photo. Thank you for sharing.
Valerie Comer says
I’m happy to!
Valerie Comer says
Bears are quite common here. I have a healthy respect of them, but not a fear. Happy to bring you along!
Debra J Pruss says
Congratulations to the winners. Thank you so much for sharing such wonderful pictures. God bless you.
Valerie Comer says
Have a great week, Debra!
Amy Perrault says
I thought I saw something in the tree on the first photo. I’ve been seeing a lot of bears with cubs this year around my house. Love it
Sylvain P says
It must have been exciting to get a picture of the little bear in the tree. Not always can you get them. Congrats to the winners.
Valerie Comer says
You’re right. Often we get just a glimpse, too quick for a series of photos!
Valerie Comer says
I’m sure I don’t need to tell you to be watchful around the cubs!
Ausjenny says
wow seeing a bear in a tree would be exciting. I kept missing seeing them in Canada but did get to see a mama bear and 3 cubs on a bus tour in America.
Priscila Perales says
Loved all your views/photos (especially that sky!). Thanks for sharing! It definitely looks like you had a great time :)
Valerie Comer says
It really was a great view, but we didn’t spend a lot of time staring at it! Too busy hiking… Also, you’re welcome!
Valerie Comer says
We don’t often see them in a tree. More often ambling on the hillside just off the road! But we generally see several each year.
Valerie Comer says
We did! I’m glad you enjoyed the photos.
Megan says
Beautiful photos, thanks for sharing!
Natalya Lakhno says
