One of the things my husband and I enjoy at the coast is hiking amid big trees, so our visit to Hidden Groves was a highlight for us. We’ve been to the redwoods, and these are nowhere near as large, but they’re bigger than the trees around home!

Such wonderful pictures. It all looks so peaceful.

Hi Valerie! Thanks for sharing your hiking experiences. Due to warmer than normal temperatures in Michigan, one reason I have not hiked is TICKS and lyme disease. We live close to a ravine and had to be careful of deer and wildlife that at times wander through the neighborhood. So does Canada in the NW have a problem? You are dressed appropriately with long sleeves and long pants. Best wishes and enjoy your summer.
Lori Smanski says
wonderful pictures. Especially the last one. Our family went to the redwoods many times when I lived in CA. They are majestic. And during the winter my parents along with friends would ski among the redwoods.
Renate says
Happy Thanksgiving Valerie and all Canadian readers. Enjoy your long weekend. Best wishes and enjoy your SUNDAY (not summer). Been an overcast and rainy week in Michigan.
Margaret Nelson says
Lori – I’m curious exactly where your parents skied among the redwoods?? I live in California and I don’t know of any place where you can do that.
Paula Marie says
Beautiful pics! Happy Thanksgiving,,!!!
Trudy says
Love your pics!! I like to walk, hiking isn’t bad, either, and Florida is flat, so it’s easier than where you are! lol!!
Lincoln says
Such beautiful pictures! It would be a long journey for me to be that healthy so as to be out hiking. You know how they say sitting is the new smoking? Well, I have a 5-pack-a-day sitting habit. :-)
Congratulations to all the winners and a happy Sunday to all our IR community!
Valerie Comer says
It truly was!
Valerie Comer says
We do have a tick problem out here, too. Maybe not as bad, but any ticks at all are too many! I do often hike in sandals, shorts, and tanks, but the weather on the coast in September (at least any time we’ve gone) is too cool for that.
Thank you for the Thanksgiving wishes! We have SO MUCH to be thankful for!
Valerie Comer says
We’ve loved seeing the coastal redwoods twice. In November 2019 we drove to a conference in Las Vegas and came back through the central valley then over to the coast at Eureka. We were so tempted to veer off into the sequoias but we simply couldn’t carve another day out of our return trip! We have friends in Reno, so maybe (if the border ever reopens!) we’ll get another chance…
Valerie Comer says
Thank you!
Valerie Comer says
I could use a Gulf of Mexico shell-collecting wander about now! But I agree, the parts of Florida I’ve seen were not exactly HIKEable!
Valerie Comer says
I value exploring the outdoors SO MUCH that I did my best to get back into shape after my Oct 2017 heart attack. I’m slower than I was, for sure, but this fall hubby’s favoring his right hip, so he can’t get too far ahead of me LOL. We were at the condo six days and hiked for four of them. The other two were nothing but rain so our “hiking” was from one souvenir store to the next, haha.

Congralations to all the winners!
Alicia Haney says
Congratulations to all the winners. Sounds like a lot of fun. Have a great Sunday and stay safe.
Milla Holt says
Wonderful pictures! They make me think of epic quests in fantasy landscapes. But that could be because I’m reading The Hobbit with my children right now. :-) Happy Thanksgiving!
Trixi says
Hubby and I went to the Redwood forest in California a few years back (2014?). What a lovely area, I’ve never seen trees so big before!! I took a picture of my husband driving through the tree they have there for that purpose…it was so cool! We enjoyed exploring every nook and cranny we could and would love to go back there again someday.
Congrats to this weeks winners! Have a blessed week IR!
Priscila Perales says

High fives all around!
Valerie Comer says
You, too! Thanks.
Valerie Comer says
There’s definitely a fantasy-esque feeling in big woods like that!
Valerie Comer says
Ah, we visited one of those trees in 2019! But we happen to like our truck mirrors still attached, so drove around instead of through.
Valerie Comer says
It was beautiful.
Valerie Comer says
Thanks!
Valerie Comer says
I’m so glad you enjoyed them!
Valerie Comer says
Thank you!
Valerie Comer says
Yay, so glad!
Trixi says
LOL! We had our little Kia Soul and pulled the mirrors in so we didn’t risk doing just that. Though in reality, the car was small enough :-)
Valerie Comer says
Aw, thank you!
Valerie Comer says
It truly was :)
Lincoln says
ROTFL!!!
Valerie Comer says
If we’d been in our Jetta, we’d have gone for it, but… ;)
Valerie Comer says
Yeah if we’d have had the Jetta, we’d have done it, but the truck is just a little wider and taller plus mirrors and… no!
Natalya Lakhno says
Forest looks like a fairy tale place. Beautiful!
Valerie Comer says
You’re not wrong about the fairy-tale vibe!
