Happy Sunday! We’re continuing our gratitude theme for November and this week I’ve been grateful for my family. I hope our American readers have enjoyed celebrating Thanksgiving this week and spending time with family and loved ones. Being an Aussie, I’m fascinated by the food you all eat for Thanksgiving dinner. We usually have turkey at Christmas served either hot with roast vegetables or cold with salads. What’s your favorite food for Thanksgiving (or Christmas if you live outside North America)?

Mary Preston says
With Christmas in the middle of summer, it’s lots of cold drinks, fruit and salads for us.
Ausjenny says
Growing up we had the roast turkey but also had roast lamb (I don’t like turkey). then would have the plum pudding with the money in it. As we got older we changed it to a cold meat and salad. For Dessert we use to buy our favourite ice creams or frozen desserts.
Lelia (Lucy) Reynolds says
My favorite food on the Thanksgiving table is the homemade hot rolls and homemade cranberry sauce.
Jessica B. says
My favorite Thanksgiving food is sweet potato casserole with a streusel topping.
Patty says
We often do both Turkey and Ham at Thanksgiving… we actually usually keep it more simple at Christmas. We might do a Chili and cornbread or some other homemade soup on Christmas Eve. On Christmas day we usually do a brunch and then a light lunch/dinner latter on.
Trudy says
We’ve always had turkey with all the trimmings at both Thanksgiving and Christmas, and usually ham, too. My favorite has always been dressing with giblet gravy, but I haven’t had giblet gravy in years. I tried making it myself one year for Mom and I, and it was ok, but not as good as Mom’s always was! We stopped having quite a few dishes when my sisters (all older) married, as their husband’s didn’t like what Mom had always fixed, so things changed. We did find foods we could all agree on, though.
Trixi says
I cook a turkey dinner with all the fixings for Christmas….mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, scalloped corn, rolls & pumpkin pie for dessert.
As a kid, my parents would do turkey for Thanksgiving and ham for Christmas.
Alicia Haney says
I, my favorite food for Thanksgiving is the sweet potato casserole and the stuffing . Have a great week and stay safe.
Debra J Pruss says
My favorite food is my Mom’s stuffing/dressing. This is the first year that I made it without her being in the house with me. I had to call and ask a couple questions. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you.
Priscila Perales says
Hi Narelle! We usually had turkey for Christmas, but thanks to still being in lockdown/not gathering with the rest of the family, we’re considering other options (we had ham last year, but haven’t yet decided for this year). Still, we’ll be making all the side dishes, just in less quantity than usual. :) What does Christmas looks like for you?
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Mary, yes, summer fruits are part of our Christmas, too. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Jenny, I remember the plum pudding with the coins, too. Trifle and pavlova are two of my favourite desserts. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Lucy, I think I’d like home made cranberry sauce and rolls, too. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Jessica, I’m always fascinated by dishes where sweet potato is served sweet rather than savoury. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Patty, I do like ham off the bone. When the weather is really hot, we tend to eat less at Christmas. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Trudy, yes, it can be hard to please everyone. I do like turkey stuffing with gravy. I never mastered the art of making gravy from scratch in the pan. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Trixi, I haven’t heard of scalloped corn and it sounds interesting. Pumpkin pie (or pumpkin served sweet) is something we don’t traditionally eat in Australia, and the pies I’ve tasted have been good. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Alicia, That does sound good. Have a great week and thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Debra, I’m glad you enjoyed making your mom’s stuffing/dressing. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Priscila, I’m sorry to hear you won’t likely have a family gathering this Christmas. We’re out of lockdown atm, but who knows what could happen in the next few weeks? A quiet Christmas is likely for me. I’m anticipating it will be a hard Christmas in many ways, being the first one since my dad passed. The weather may be cooler than usual. It’s surprisingly warm today, lol. Thanks for commenting. 😊
Amy Perrault says
We have the big dinner with turkey & ham for all the occassions
Sylvain P says
We have everything for all holidays but our thanksgiving is in October
Natalya Lakhno says
I have a sweet tooth :) so the more sweets – the better LOL
Lincoln says
Hi, Narelle! Congratulations to all our winners!
I enjoy pretty much all the traditional American flavors except pumpkin pie. For me, it’s a texture thing. I much prefer fruit pies and pecan pie.
Thanks for a month of gratitude reminders!
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Amy, Your dinner sounds lovely. Thanks for commenting. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Sylvain, I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving in October. Thanks for commenting. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Natalya, The sweets are always good, lol. Thanks for commenting. :)
Narelle Atkins says
Hi Lincoln, You’re very welcome and you’re right, pumpkin pie does have a different texture to the other pies. Thanks for commenting. :)
