Happy September!
Maybe it’s because I’ve always loved school (hello, nerd!) but September always makes me think of school. And even better, school supplies.
This past week, my hoarding of school supplies came in handy as my eldest, starting his first year of high school, was struggling to keep his notes organized with his various classes. I completely blew his mind when I got him a different colored notebook for each subject and then helped him color code his homework planner.
Next to school and office supplies? Organizing is my favorite thing.
If you’re an astute Sunday Edition reader, you might notice that we’ve dropped a mention of the monthly gift cards. We’ve made the decision to discontinue this practice and instead use those funds in the two big annual giveaways.

I love colour and organising stationary too! I got my six year old colouring pencils with his name on that I’d always wanted when I was at school, he was completely unimpressed 😂
Lori R says
September makes me think of school too since I am a teacher. I love to buy new supplies especially magic markers and sharpies!
Mary Preston says
My daughter and I love to visit Office Works to buy supplies.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Oh no! I always wanted those too! (Now I’ve made pens with my book info and those fill the want.)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I love all the kinds of sharpies available these days. The thin ones are so fun!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yes! Supply stores are the best!
Lilly says
I love stationery, I have more notebooks than I use and I love when in my university they let students who have small businesses sell things from time to time, many girls sell notebooks or pencils!
Businesses that have stationery brought from Japan or Korea are very popular.
Valerie Comer says
Since I do 99.9% of my organizing digitally, I pretty much have to stay out of Staples and other office-supply stores, because I tend to forget that all those pretty things will simply not get used, and my house is too small to keep buying them anyway!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Some of the stationery from Japan and Korea (and China) is so pretty.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Heh. There’s that. I figure since we still have two in school there’s a chance it’ll get used, so I console myself that way.
Alicia Haney says
Hi, I love when they start putting out the school supplies before school starts, I am always looking for something. I taught Catechism classes for over 25 years and for the past 8 yrs, this will be the 9th year that I have been giving my grandaughter and our grandson who live in the same town as us, their Catechism classes here at my house and they both still like doing that, she is in 11th grade and our grandson is in 9th grade.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
How fun! I love that you get to do that for your grandkids.
Trudy says
I never color-coded my stuff, but I did have different colors for classes, and I kept a little notebook that I used for homework assignments. My Daddy always liked the stationery aisle at the store, where he looked at desk calendars, pens, and stuff, and he and I used to spend time there together! We also liked a store, Meehans, that had tons of that kind of stuff. I still love having lots of pens and notebooks!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I don’t always color code, but I always appreciate it when I do. :)
Lori Smanski says
I so agree with you. September has always had that wonderful feel of new promises to come. I always got so excited about school starting and new clothes and new shoes and looking forward to seeing old friends and making new friends. As my three brothers started to go to school also, I got so excited for them also and wanted to help them feel the excitement. Alas, it never happened with them. Or my younger sister. Sigh. That was ok, I loved school and the promise of learning something new . Especially band, art and history.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yes! I always loved learning. I’m trying to teach my kids to enjoy it as well, but some days are more successful with that than others.

like colorful office supplies
Paula Shreckhise says
I love notebooks and black click pens. I read and review books so I have several plastic coated notebooks that have several tabs inside. I don’t color code things but I know what is in each notebook. Too bad Walmart stopped carrying them! Guess I’ll have to find something else.
I am old school and write out my reviews by hand before entering them into goodreads and copying and pasting to retail sites.
I homeschooled my four kids and used to love school supplies! The planning was more fun than the execution!
Angeline says
Congratulations to the winners! I love organizing my school supplies
Elizabeth Maddrey says
👍
Elizabeth Maddrey says
The planning is definitely better than the application!
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Yes!
Bonnie Heringer says
My babies are all grown up. I miss buying school supplies. Although for years after they graduated, I still shopped the sales. I still have spiral notebooks from those sales. I love color, as in pencils, crayons, markers. And I wish I was organized!! 😲
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Definitely bittersweet when the need to stop buying supplies hits!
Diana says
I too have school supplies stashed away. I homeschooled my youngest and did in home day care for 30 years. My grand kids now are benefiting. They don’t always rejoice when I find what they need to continue doing homework. Lol
Martha says
I gave my son matching color notebooks and folders before he went to college. He was impressed I had enough on hand to do that, but wasn’t impressed with the fact that he could use one set for each class. My supply weakness are sticky notes and colored pens, but they have to be certain brands.
Debra Pruss says
I look forward to your blog everyday. Thank you so much for sharing. Congratulations to the winners. God bless you.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Ha. Yeah I guess it’s a double-edged sword there.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I’m really choosy about pens! My husband rolls his eyes at me and then tries to steal mine. I tell him he can either poke fun or use them, not both. :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says

Lelia (Lucy) Reynolds says
I love organizing. Thank you for sharing.
Melynda says
I need your help with organizing my oldest for school this year! Neither he nor I are naturally organized and he is starting high school this year as well. My goal for the beginning of this week is to help find a system that works before he starts his hybrid school on Wednesday.
Priscila Perales says
I learned color coordinating from my Academic Advisor, and it was a game changer for me. :) Fun times.
Chelsea Gardner says
It’s such an interesting thing having kids in high school. Trying to teach them to be organized and then getting out of the way so the can actually do it. Good job mama!
Cindi Knowles says
I can honestly say I am a recovered hoarder of school and office supplies. My kids are all grown and I don’t work bcz of health reasons so I don’t have to keep it all in stock. But back in the day I don’t think there wasn’t anything that I didn’t have in my organized ‘office’ area. Even the neighborhood kids knew to come over for what they needed.
I still have to walk fast by the isles on back to school sales bcz I want to check out what’s new, lol
Michelle Fidler says
I love stationery. No kids but I’ve bought myself lots of gel pens recently: Pentel EnerGel, Tul, and Sharpie. I have them in different colors. I looked at colorful Post-it Notes but didn’t buy any. I might buy another A5 binder and paper on Amazon. It’s about the size of a junior legal pad, 5×8. The binders are padded and have a magnetic closure. The paper is thick. Some people use them as planners or journals, but I just use it as a notebook.
Sarah Taylor says
I Love colorful supplies Blessing’s to you!
Ausjenny says
I’m late our school starts back end of Jan (New school year) and I use to buy supplies for the operation Christmas child.
I hadn’t noticed about the gift cards but I fully understand. I just want to take a moment to thank you for doing this for so long. I did appreciate when I won but I don’t come here to win a gift card I come cos this is my community. Keep up the good work
Natalya Lakhno says
I love organizing too! Although, you wouldn’t say that by the current state of my office lol
Abigail Harris says
I desperately need to catch up on Toni Shiloh’s books.
