I hope you all had a good 4th of July (even if it was just another day in your country!) We had a lovely lunch with my sister and father and then, once it got dark, hubby, the kids, and I set off a few fireworks in the driveway before calling it a night.
The best part of our 4th celebration turns out to have been the lovely phone call we had with my husband’s mother. She’s been in declining health and mental acuity since the fall, but on Tuesday she was alert and cogent and we had a long, lovely chat.
And then Thursday morning she went home to be with Jesus.
We’re grateful she didn’t suffer for a long, protracted time. And we’re grateful that we were able to tell her how much we loved her earlier in the week.
I’d love to know what, if anything, you did to celebrate!

I went to be with friends for a bit on the fourth, worked on editing a book, and watched fireworks on tv, while someone in my neighborhood shot some off! Someone started at 5:30, three hours before it got dark, and went until about 11:30!! Praying for your family, Elizabeth!
RuthieH says
I’m sorry to hear of your family’s loss, praying for you. How wonderful to have had that last talk with her though, such a gift.
Happy Sunday to you all.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Thank you!
Sounds like a great fourth. I’ve been pleased that the fireworks seem to be done already this year. I feel like they usually go on for another week or more.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Thank you! Yes, God is so good.

We got home on July 3 from a week long trip, so didn’t have much energy on the 4th. We did manage to have a bbq for supper and made homemade ice cream! Our city didn’t have fireworks this year because the supporting committee who paid in the past had fallen apart. There’s a new committee already formed for next year, but it was quiet this year :-)
So thankful for the great phone call with your mother-in-law just before she went to her heavenly home. It reminded me of when my husband and I called my dad from Cambodia and had a wonderful chat, and then just a few hours later got the news that he’d headed to heaven! Praying for God’s comfort and strength in the days of transition ahead.

What a blessing that final chat must be to your family, Beth! Praying for you all.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Thank you so much!
Quiet sounds good, honestly :)
Elizabeth Maddrey says
Very much so!

Its often in the last days a person rallies or seems almost normal so to speak. this happened with dad, he had had a stroke but in the finals weeks or so he was almost like the old dad. We had one last Christmas when he was like his former self then Mum had a few days where he was like his former self and he passed away peacefully with a smile on his face mum said.
I am so glad you got to have that final conversation where your Mother In Law was doing better and you got to say those things to her. Praying for your family at this time. I know while she is now at peace you and your family still feel like you have a hole in your heart where something is missing.

Elizabeth, I am so sorry about the loss of your mother-in-law. My Mom went to the waiting arms of Jesus in January. It is a hard path to take to say goodbye. God bless you.
Elizabeth Maddrey says
I’m so sorry for your loss, too, Debra! Big hugs.
