Happy Sunday! Last weekend, at the NRL football Grand Final, the pregame entertainment included a tribute to the late Tina Turner. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Tina Turner was wildly popular in Australia and she was the advertising face of Rugby League. Her song, The Best, will forever be associated with football in Australia.
There’s also a dance called The Nutbush (1970’s song – Nutbush City Limits) that had a resurgence in popularity in the 80’s and 90’s. I first discovered The Nutbush when I was in high school and did a weekly aerobics/dance class with my friends at a community hall. The DJ’s would also play Nutbush City Limits at weddings and parties, as well as in the pubs and clubs, because it was a song that drew everyone onto the dance floor.
I believe The Nutbush is a uniquely Aussie thing, and I’d love to hear if you’ve heard about it. Here’s a YouTube clip of The Nutbush being performed by a Canberra flash mob in the middle of my city.
