Welcome to another Sunday. The days seem to fly by faster the older I get.
The picture above is from the top of one mountain(in Switzerland), looking toward several others. We’d ridden a train (think choo-choo, like at an amusement park, not locomotive) to the top of the mountain. Some of the trip was made at what seemed like a 45° degree angle. A bit scary. And we stopped to let people off who LIVED up there. The only way up and down was this little train (no cars there). But it was BEAUTIFUL!
And because today is November 11th, I want to wish our veterans a Happy Veterans Day.
I did a bit of research. You know that writer curiosity thing.
In the US, and several other countries, we celebrate Veterans Day (formerly known as Armistice Day; and no there shouldn’t be an apostrophe) on 11/11 because World War 1 ended at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month (in 1918).
Here in the US, Veterans Day became a legal holiday in 1938. Originally, it only celebrated those members of the military that died in World War 1, but in 1954, it was changed to honor all veterans.
So, to all those who’ve served in our military and to all those who’ve had a loved one serve…

Hi Ginger, here in Australia we have Remembrance Day to celebrate the end of WWI- 100 years ago today! We pause and have a minute of silence at 11am, then play the last post. It is always moving. We talk as a family about the sacrifice of others so that we can live in freedom- and the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus so that we can live in freedom with Him.
Blessings:)

Canada also celebrates Remembrance Day today. The Royal Canadian Legion, with help from cadets, has been selling poppies on street corners and via boxes in stores for a couple of weeks, and everyone is wearing one on their lapel. The Legion is a non-profit, volunteer-based organization that supports Veterans and their families, promotes Remembrance and strengthens communities.
“Lest we forget.”

Hi Ginger! Thanks for sharing the beautiful picture of Switzerland, which reminds of my 2007 trip, and the history of Veterans Day. Blessings on this Sunday. Best wishes and happy writing.

LOVE your Switzerland shares! Someplace I have always wished to visit!
Thanks for the Veterans day wishes too, all the men in my family are vets, and I still have an active nephew in the Army, he is actually on his way home from Afghanistan as we speak!!
Shannon Taylor Vannatter says
My husband always does a veterans day sermon and gives the veterans an American flag every year. We have several family members who served and my husband’s two half-brothers are both on active duty.

We visited Vimy Ridge last year and it was a very powerful experience. I wish all teens were made to visit some of these historical sites as part of their high school curriculum. Thanks for the picture of Switzerland. One day I hope to visit it.

That’s awesome, Wemble. It’s a good way to remind our young ones that our freedom isn’t free.

When I did research, ‘cuz a writer…, it said the poppy was used mostly for Memorial Day. My original beginning picture was going to be a poppy field. I should have done it anyway.
Ginger Solomon says
You’re welcome, Renate. Thanks.
Ginger Solomon says
Funny you should say that, Paula Marie, because Switzerland wasn’t on my to-do list and I wasn’t even sure I wanted to go. I enjoyed Ireland more, but I was happy I went. I would’ve always wondered if I hadn’t. I would go back to Ireland (in a heartbeat), but I probably won’t go to Switzerland again, given the opportunity.
And thanks to your family members, past and current, who serve(d).
Ginger Solomon says
That’s a nice way to thank them and give them honor. We had a video presentation (we do for most holidays).
Thanks to your family members for their service.
Ginger Solomon says
I had to look up Vimy Ridge, so I’m going to say it’s probably not just the teens who need the field trips.
Natalya Lakhno says
Thank you to our veterans! Remembering and praying for you!

From what I’ve read, that’s true in the USA. I think your Memorial Day and our Remembrance Day have more of the same “purpose” than your Veterans Day and our Remembrance Day, even though the latter pair are on the same day and celebrate the armistice. Confusing!
